I think 30 buy-ins for a level is good, especially if you're learning at a good rate. However, I'm a poor college student and felt very uncomfortable losing $50+ in 5 seconds when I took a shot at 50NL with 20BI, and will only move to 50NL when I have 40 buy-ins. Currently at 55 buy-ins for 25NL. But if you can reload if you're particularly having bad sessions, 25BI should be fine.

Just to back up his post. Yeah 30 BI is fine per level. if your ever running bad don't ever be embarresed or ashamed to drop a level just for a little bit anyway

It depends how much you play tables, if 2-3 table enough 20-30bi, if more than 8 tables, you need about 100 bi's.

It depends on your TRUE winrate and monthly volume, lower winrate players along with lack of volume will need more buy ins behind them and, highe winrate players with solid monthly volumes will need less, but overall 50 buy ins is enough for any decent player.
Also, in order to know when to go up and down work in terms of ABI (Average Buy in) and never move up/down straight up, always start mixing levels, like if your used to play 6 tables os NL10 u can start with $500, if u want to start moving up in stakes and have $750 in bankroll u can start adding 2x NL25 tables with 4x NL10

4 x $10 = $40
2 x $25 = $50
Total $90

ABI $15
$15 x 50 buy ins = $750

And drop down in buy ins whenever u hit 50 buy ins for the lower stake, thats how i do it.
