Hey guys. How exactly should I determine which hands I can 3bet for value against different kinds of players? I’m sure it has something to do with their opening range and continue vs 3bet range but I sometimes have trouble determining if I can 3bet hands like AJ, KQ, and 88 for value. Thanks a lot guys

Hi. 3 Betting "for value" is generally done with hands which are likely to be ahead of your opponents range. Roughly speaking, you are 3 betting for value if you expect them to continue with hands you crush/dominate a big chunk of the time. If your opponent has a decent range but is folding to 3bets a lot then you can 3bet wider with hands you would normally flat with (vs a nitty or nervous player). Your 3bets in that case could be considered bluffs but still hopefully have some postflop value like with baby pairs and high suited connectors. Don't 3bet with pure trash (j2o,94 etc). Do it with hands that have several ways to get there by the river with backup draws (89s, 63s, T8s etc). But do this rarely and only for balance. Make sure your 3bet range is weighted towards strong value combos. Against weak ranges, your 3bets with {99+ AK} could be for pure value. But against strong ranges then some of these hands become 3bet bluffs. Typically your value 3bets will be limited to KK+ against good regs. It all depends WHO you are against

Quit over-thinking it.
Use the 3bet to isolate a player.
Maybe choose a weak player....

So, you see a guy that opens wide. wait for him to open again, 3bet him so that everyone else folds. Unfortunately you cannot do this in the micro-stakes because everyone will just call.

My take which is not correct, but developing wrong idea really:

In cases where opponent is far from balanced play (25NL and under I would guess) 3bettin is just a tool to react against villain’s range and actions thus performing trivial exploitative play. This play includes 3betting with hands that have high relative hand value if called & blocker as a bluff to have fold equirty or if you determine that villain will call 3bet with worse hands you can bet for value. Better you are, wider you can operate. Imo all is decided how good you play against opponent when he calls. Best player in the world you don’t mind if he calls when you 3bet AA, worst player in the 5NL pool you don’t care if he calls when you 3bet 8Js because you know you don’t lose that much against him. Now sometimes you want to end the hand as soon as possible because villain is too good for you, in this case you prefer to 3bet everything (mostly) you want to play for fold equity and for to gain upper hand on post flop play if he calls, this range typically is quite tight though and for value mostly, but includes hands that if called you are not desperate.

EV value has a meaning, thus normally I have seen 55 to 65% equity value range suggested against his range. This is wrong in a sense that calling range of a villain is normally not decided by the range he opens in micros. Instead he either opens too much and folds nothing, or opens too much and folds almost everything except KK+. But typically if he opens normally or too little he folds way too much to 3bet and thus all advises (except blackrain ) are way off.

Ragequit has a good explanation as well as Smokewood for different purposes of 3bet.

There are many more indicators than the cards you have in hand - you have to consider your position at the table - how other players play, what range of hands they open - and the size of the table rates. Good luck
