3betting light doesn't refer to the bet size, it's the range of hands you're willing to 3bet with. For example, in micro full ring games, a 3bet from most players is KK+/AK, for a looser player it might be QQ+/AQs/AK. 3betting light would be choosing to 3bet w a hand outside of this range of hands, say w AJs or w TT.

Why 3bet light? Because the other guy will be terrified by it (geez, he's got KK+ again!!!) and fold. If he sees you doing it often enough, he may figure out that you're 3betting light and make a huge mistake - call w a marginal hand. When he does that and you're in position, you can usually bully him off of even a better hand than yours.

OK, so how do I defend against someone who's obviously 3betting light if calling is a bad idea? By 4betting. A light 3bettor is going to generally respect a 4bet and will have to fold all kinds of hands. Further, the 3bettor can make a huge mistake by calling the 4bet w an inferior hand.

How do I defend against a light 4bettor if calling is a mistake? I won't go there, I think you've figured it out.

The key is having a good sense of whether or not Villain is 3betting/4betting light.

So, applicable to tourneys? Yes, though slightly different (and tourney players may correct or expand this at will). With everyone relatively ss'd in MTT's (typical cash game, everyone has 100bb's, not true in MTT's where number of blinds changes quickly), 3betting light as a "bullying" tactic is a key tactic. You're looking to 3bet passive players who will fold to 3bets. If you're confident they're real passive, you can 3bet light w ATC. You're also looking to 3bet light against aggressive late position openers - in lp, agg players' ranges of hands are going to be huge, not premium, so they'll have problems calling or shoving over a 3bet. W agg players, you can't count on them folding, though, so I usually 3bet light-er, not ATC.

A typical 3bet is roughly 3x the bet made by opener - if there are limpers behind, you need to make the bet bigger, but not necessarily pot size, depends on table dynamics. A typical 4bet is roughly 2.5x -3x the size of the 3bet (if you're in a tourney and this puts you close to being all in, obv you're going to shove as your 4bet). But betsizing is heavily dependent on stack sizes, esp in MTT's, so...

Hope that helps. c9's thread is pretty awesome, though, and more detailed, so I suggest studying it.

To 3bet light is simply to 3bet with hands that don't typically warrant a 3bet. For example 3betting 78s from you BB when a frequent stealer open raises the button.

.... or that ^
