After playing poker seriously for a number of years, I want to try and grind my way up to a real stake. I play live 1/3. I'm starting off at 1/3 because I don't have a big enough BR for 2/5. If I did I would start there. I am trying to determine how large my bankroll needs to be. I can dedicate anywhere from 3000 to 5500. I'd like to start off on the lower end but I also want to make sure I have enough of a BR to make a serious go. I typically buy in for 400 (you can buy in up to half the big stack) but I'm thinking of taking that down to 300 so I can have more buyins. I definitely feel like I can't go lower than that - I hate playing short stack poker. I'm a big stack player. I know the conventional wisdom on how many buy ins but I was hoping to hear from folks with experience. Let me emphasize I want to make a serious go of grinding up levels, not just weekend recreation.

$2400 with a 3bi stop loss should be manageable for $300NLH live. A lot depends on how deep the game gets on average and how loose the game is. If you can somewhat table select with 3-4 tables running $300NLH then it's even more doable.
