There is a casino in close proximity to where I live. They spread a $1-$2 No limit game. The buy in structure seems a little bit odd to me. You can buy in anywhere from $40 min up to $60 max. This is cool because you do not need to roll with $200 to stake yourself at this table. It makes it a lot easier for me to find the extra money to risk when it is only $60 bucks. I am sure you have already figured out the flip side of it though. The flipside is the buy in is only 30x the big blind as opposed 100x buy that you'll find at most casinos. Although a $200 buy in would make it a lot harder for me to find the extra money to sit down it does give me the opportunity to see a lot more flops. Plus the standard 100x buy in gives you more room to make plays and get tricky.

With the buy in being so small I feel a lot more pressure to tighten up. If you play a hand, you get re-raised, and then you see a flop you can easily take a hit of at least 25% to your stack if things do not work out and someone gets the best of you. That is if you just see a flop and then are forced to fold. Obviously I am not talking about playing a weak passive game of calling and folding, but we all know that there are just those hands where the cards do not work out for us and we get the worst of it. Poker is a fickle mistress.
You can only wait so long before, "you'll go like Broomcorn's uncle" though.

How would you play a ring game with a lower buy in than this? What can I do to overcome the downsides of such a low buy in?

Put a ton of pressure on opponents no one wants to go broke so be the guy applying the pressure until they become so loose you can shift gears and exploit then

You can't 'overcome' the shallow stacks here, you have to accept the higher variance this game will have. Play tight, big pots for big hands, and be very very very aware of stack sizes!! ALWAYS play with a full stack!!! Top up after each hand if needed. When you do play a hand you should always expect to get you stack in or get opponents stack in on the flop, yeah it's that type of game.

Example, you have AA on the BTN with a $60 stack, there are 3 limpers, you raise to $17, get 1 caller, pot is now $38 and you have $43 behind, you should be shoving your stack on all flops unless you have a HUGE read on your opponent.

Ya I guess it really does come down to spends hours and hours waiting for the right spot to get it all in the middle. This is usually how it goes for me, but there are sometimes that I sit and sit and sit, and wait and wait and wait, but the good strong preflop hands never get there for me. I get so frustrated when I wait so long to never see a good pocket pair and I end up blinding out.

I would think the answer would be to find a few spots to pick up some blinds and small pots to keep from blinding out. Sometimes the tables are so loose I get looked up every hand I try and steal in, and I get looked up by multiple players too. I guess this just goes back to what you wee saying about bringing extra to chip up every time it my stack takes a hit.

This idea is great imo , you find people who are not ahead of you with high amount of money and you get to call some flops too !!

I noticed a type-0 in my original post.

My question should have read, "How do you play with a low buy in like this?" Sorry for any confusion. I tried to go back and edit it, but for some reason I can not.
