Zero to hero....or....The road to nowhere

I was reading the other day about those who begin from $0 and by thier poker accumen manage to build thousands in winnings. Tough go that, Im sure. About this time my wife walks in and promptly asks wether im playing poker...again.

This gets me thinking.....

While Im sure that building a significant bankroll from nothing is tough.....It just might be to my benefit to conduct such an experiment myself.
If I cash out what I have and truly do this, my wife sees the checks, maybe even takes them to the bank herself. When asked I will simply shrug like its no big deal and say, ehhh...poker winnings

Im off the hook!

The windfall creates the best of both worlds. She sees some hard gain from that "time wasting crap". We both enjoy the money. I get to play poker without the distraction and caustic comments. And....heaven forbid....even if my little self challenge gets me nowhere....The road was peaceful

Not insane. Many on here have built something from nothing. Playing just freerolls and using those winnings to play I've gone from $0 to just over $20 on poker stars and $0 to about $40 on Full Tilt. That's just been in the past 2 weeks.

I think ChuckTs on here has a BR many many times greater than that and he also started doing the same thing from what I understand.

I started with nothing and am proud to be able to say that I never deposited anything on a poker site, and while I have a modest bankroll by a lot of people's standards I now have plenty to play in the tournaments and levels I like. And I have taken money out from time to time, it's quite a feeling - even though tiny compared to my paychecks at my job, it's somehow ... sweeter (and as a practical matter very helpful this past Christmas: we have 3 daughters 11 to 17 and they are getting expensive).

However, after saying all that, I'm not sure I would want to go back and do it all over again. I think the first time I placed in the money in a freeroll was something like 60 cents; needless to say it took a LONG time from that first freeroll, a lot of patience and bankroll management. Sunday night I made my largest tournament winning - $560 - modest to many, but a heck of a long way from that first 60 cents. I love poker and would do it if I had to, but I'd rather not start all over. Why not compromise and take some of your money out, but leave enough that you're not fighting it out in those ugly freerolls where you might play for hours and come out with ... 60 cents ?

Yeah, it's tough at first. I had to get top 18 out of a 1,000 to get $1.10. But sometimes you get a really good win or high finish (like 2nd for $30 in another one). It should be just as much about the journey as the destination.

It's a good way to start out. Grinding at the low limits on a tiny BR builds a poker skill set that encompasses more than just strategy and game play. You'll really manage that roll because of the time invested in getting it up and running and you'll also make some good decisions about where to play so that you maximise your time spent playing. Then you get to experience the fluctuations of a bankroll and get used to the variance and see the skill come through over time. All of this is extremely valuable but often overlooked.

You gotta do what u gotta do but doing it just as an experiment i dont know if taking out all what u have now & trying that is such a good idea. Let's say it doesnt work out then you have to go back & deposit when you shouldnt have had to in the 1st place. Just seems like a waste of time to me just to be "experimental" but like i said, do what ya gotta do man.

Vhyre, good Idea, I have decided to do the same thing, my wife doesn't mind that I play too much(at least that what she keeps telling me) but I know otherwise and if you do bring checks in on a regular basis then it's almost a guarantee that your better half will be more open to your hobby, just be prepared for a long hard journey into the freeroll world as there are an abundancy of fishand donks and the badbeats are as common as tornados in Kansas,
Just try not to tilt too much or the trek will be that much longer.
