Just wondering how disciplined we here at CC are; What's the biggest hand you've mucked knowing that you're beat?

Me personally i get really attached to hands and just cant let em go sometimes - i pay people off for way too much money.

I onced folded a Fullhouse, AAAJJ , my opponent then showed JJ for 4 of a kind . I knew him as ultra tight and since he raised post flop and flop was AAJ i had one A and i bet and he raised me. Turn is a J I bet the A and he went all in , and to me something smelled fishy so i folded

The best hand I ever folded was a set of kings in a LHE game. Late position and I raise preflop with KK.There's several limpers. flop comes KJx. Checked to me and I bet, 3 calls. Turn: Q. Checked to me and I bet, 3 calls. River 10. first guy bets, 2nd raises, and 3rd guy 3-bets. Now my set of kings doesn't look so good with a board showing 10JQK, and 3 players who looked like they were hoping to catch an ace. Easy, but heartbreaking fold.

You know I was totally distracted at the moment, it was way early in the tourney (4 hands) and for a second I though he had AA in the hole (he pushed so fast when that Ace dropped I couldn't see straight) or would catch the flush for sure on the river. Then the timer started clicking away and I couldn't think myself back into the right frame of mind to make the call. I'm embarrassed that I layed it down but at the time I didn't want to be first out. Of course I was out just a few hands later.....what a doofus.

I threw away a nine high flush because I was sure my opponent had a higher flush since there were four of the same suit on the board. You have to throw away the good hands if you are very sure that you're beat.

Just think how much money you would take off me if we'd actually sit at the same table more often...
you could retire!

Once I folded a straight (ace to five); I was BB an I had Q2. The flop was: 4 5 3. My opponent raised 200, then the turn was: ace. He raised 200, I reraised 200, then he went all in, I folded. He had 7 6.

I've folded pocket As, Ks, Qs when the board shows huge flush draws/straight draw, over pairs/trips when I have a good read on my opponent and know they aren't bluffin' when they lead out betting, and I know they have me beat. Of course...I've held on to those same hands like grim death when i knew I should have thrown them away too...:/

I've folded bullets many times after raising pre-flop. Unfortunately, the flop would come up K K 5, and someone would go all-in, and I'd fold. Thank goodness I did, because I would have been beat by a 3 of a kind, K's. I've also stayed in a hand with bullets for way to long, as Juicee has, and quickly found out, while still a newbie, that bulletsare never a sure thing!

The biggest and best lay down i ever made was in a pot limit Holdem game online.
I don't recall all the details about the hand but it was a case of once bitten twice shy.
This was about 4 years back, i layed down a diamond nut flush( A-x ) on the river.
I had flopped the nuts and some strong betting ensued with me and another player, even at the turn i still had the stone cold nuts and this guy was not relenting.
I was in my element as the board had not paired up and there was no hand out there for this guy to be so aggressive with, even trips didn't worry me one bit at this point.
When the river produced another diamond a slight alarm bell sounded in my head, it reminded me of something that had happened to me a few months previous, when i lost my entire stack (about $600) losing to a straight flush on the river, while holding an Ace high flush.
Back in those days i played some high end ring games.
The same sort of situation was occurring again as the river diamond made a possible straight flush for my opponent.
Of course he pushed for the max, and it took me the whole clock to lay that one down.
He showed his hand( yep, straight flush ) and although i was major pissed about the whole thing, i saved myself from going broke once again.
I am pretty sure i was still recovering from that last beat at the time and for that reason i saved myself some dollars but still lost about $200 in that one hand.
I didn't have the time under my belt back then to notice some of the more subtle things to look out for but i sure learned the hard way the first time round.
It saved me the 2nd time round and allowed me to continue playing poker without having to start all over again trying to build a stack.
In a sense they were both bad beat situations, but you know what, in a bigger picture sense, i feel that those beats helped my game and my understanding of the hidden dangers that are out there.
These days i will still lose my stack to similar situations in a tournament, but i cant see it happening again in a hurry in a ring game.

Yesterday I folded AQ. Hit two pair on the turn, but when he came with a big re-raise on the river something told me he either had a straight or a flush, so I folded. Don't know if I was right or not :)

Q: What does pocket rockets against trip dueces and a :turtle: have in common?

A: Laid on their backs they are both F***ed.

I have folded pockets Aces loads of times when I know I am being beaten, (or at least so paranoid that I believe it) - as with cowboys with an Ace in the flop.

But the biggest hand I ever laid down was for a tiny pot, where I had what I thought was at the time the nut flush with Ace Queen, (I was technically wrong), hoping someone would be trying their luck with a king of hearts, so I bet enough to milk the player in drawing for another heart on fourth street or the river.

:D I thought all my Christmases had come at once when I saw him raise all-in after the 8 of hearts hit and before I hit call - I saw what heart it was... there was a straight flush potential out there. I thought soooo long about it, that I actually timed out :(. The guy showed his hand, and and he had two hearts too. King and a 7 - the 7 giving him a straight flush .

I was relieved I didn't lose my money  - but I don't know if it counts, because I am really not sure if I would have called it if I had more time!!

Biggest hand that should not have been called but was...:withstupi

In a live game, just recently, I saw my housemate, raise the pot to £50 all-in on the flop in middle position, with top two pair (Aces and Tens) to kill off a club flush draw, only to have one of the scariest men I have ever seen, call the £50 and hit his flush on the river  . If it was me I would have hit Tilt and known better to bring more money to the table, but he did and made back his loss with a bit of profit too :) .

I like the thread - keep the posts coming - it makes for a good read!

Peace,

Scouse.

PS - I have tried to use as many of the smileys as I could in one post - But I had missed out :p;):frown: and of course :hello:.

I just realised how similar your experience and mine were. The difference is, I am a tiny fish and had previously won a small amount being on the winning end of a straight flush against a big slick flush - as opposed to having to learn the hardest way I can imagine... losing your bank roll. Still who said a poker education was cheap.

In truth, I feel a bit more wiser - and I would like to think I would actually have the strength to reach over and click FOLD.

Cheers for your post.

A High Flush, but the board was 2 paired so it wasn't hard to put down.

I posted this thread right after losing a big pot in an MTT and realized that i really should have layed it down:
had 23s in the BB and saw a flop of 33J or something like that
i bet, a guy raised big and i called.
turn brought a blank and i bet again, and again he raised
I should have stopped right then and there and thought 'what does he have?'
i mean if he has a 3 which he most likely does, then i'm beat (unless of course he has 23 like me; then we tie)
he could have top pair, but in an unraised family pot, why would you raise the BB with a dangerous flop like that?
JJ for an overfull also possible, and i'm a huge dog in that case.
So basically the only situation that i'm ahead is if he has top pair or a PP
Either way I couldn't let go of the hand and ending up stackin off vs his bigger kicker because I didnt take the time to stop and think; something essential to playing poker

The irony being in the fact that if you did think, you could have said... hang on, anything other than a two next to his three, is going to beat your kicker, which, assuming he limped in with later position, (that he wasn't the SB), then could have been an issue for concern.

When I have the strength to put hands like that down - and not because I time out like a lame duck - I know I will have progressed as a poker player.

Thank you for the post, at least I get to learn without having to lose my little measely bankroll!

Cheers!

Last week i think it was, in a Nightly series game i laid down a full house because of single J.

Had made the boat on the turn but the bet was called and by the river my chip stack was threatened when faced with an all-in push.

There are 2 questions thanks to Poker Night Live i always ask myself now when facing resisitance in a betting scenario - what could he be holding and is it beating me.

Well this time it worked :) as he too had made a boat with thanks to the only card on the board that could have hurt - the J, it had come down in the flop, stayed out of my way but would have been the killer card had i called.

Layed my full house down and saved myself 1,000 chips and finished 2nd.
