I am in the position of putting together a private MTT for a convention in August. Right now, the size is between 20-80 runners.

If you had to put together a private tournament, what structure would you use?
The goal is to start the tournament around 11:30PM, but not run more than 4 hours...

Here's my idea:

$100 +15 buy-in (may go as high as $200 +20)
2000 chip starting stacks
30 minute blind levels

25/50
50/100
100/200 (color up)
200/400
300/600
500/1000 (color up)
1000/2000
2000/4000

etc...

Wow, that is a steep structure. Why the 4 hour time limit?

Wow, its geared toward a quick push/fold stage for a lot of players. Any reason for that?

Uhhh, just re read your OP, 4 hours max, ok, theres my reason.

Why start so late? Must be an after convention thing? 11:30 p.m. means if you are organizing it, you are serving cocktails but drinking water??? :D

have about 3 extra levels between each of the ones you already have and start with 8k

Start with 3-5k and add antes. Also 30 min blind levels is too long for a 4 hour tournament - make them 20.

Yeah 200 chips for a $200 buy-in possibly with the blinds rising quite fast seems a bit to much. How many players are going be playing you hope?

I don't know how private MTT's work, but can I ask why you are charging rake for them if it's private? I assume you know the people or something? Wont it be players dealing themselves?

What convention is it by the way? Just curious. Goodluck with it!

Convention is DEFCON19 at the Rio Aug 4-8.

The Rio Poker room manager said they would spread a private MTT of 2-8 tables for us at standard tournament fees if we gave them enough notice so they could have dealers on hand. The only problem is if we wanted to go bigger, we would have to move it to Caesar's or pay huge fees for a special event.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of structure to suggest for the game. It would start really late in the evening and need to finish up by morning.

The rule of thumb is your tourney will end around the time the big blind is equal to the starting amount of chips. So the clock is every bit as important as the blinds.

Since you have the Rio Poker Room manager on board, so to speak, why not tell him what you are wanting and have them sort it out? After all, they have some experience with that sort of thing, at least so I've heard.

5K stack ( 6 -$500 chips, 12 - $100 chips, 10 - $50 chips, 12 $25 chips)

20 min levels

50/100
100/200
150/300

200/400
250/500
300/600

400/800
500/1000
600/1200

800/1600
1000/2000
1500/3000

This is the structure I would go with.
