pokerstars Announces New Game: Power Up Poker.
The latest announcement from the online poker giant concerns yet another novelty, named Power Up poker, which combines the element of Hold’em and popular games like Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering.

What’s Power Up poker all about?
Failure is a part of the innovation process, so PokerStars doesn’t seem to be overly concerned about these unsuccessful projects. Instead, they come up with new ideas, looking to keep up with the latest online trends and incorporate them in the traditional game of Texas Hold’em.

That’s the fundamental idea behind Power Up poker.

It is a game that combines elements of classic poker with new powers that can influence the way a hand plays out beyond the usual bluffing, value betting, and bluff-catching. Although there are no details on what these powers will be exactly, from the published screenshots, it seems they’ll come with some nice visual effects to boot.

Closed Alpha
Currently, Power Up poker is in a closed Alpha, meaning it’s still a long way to go before we see it available to the general player pool, especially in the real money variation. Up to this point, the game’s been developed in a closed, sandbox environment, with the help of experienced, high-volume players.

It’s taken a lot of work to even reach the Alpha stage, but it seems PokerStars development teams are happy with the direction project is headed, and are planning to keep improving and expanding the test pool, aiming to come up with a product that’ll achieve the earlier mentioned goals.

Do we need Power Up poker?
If you keep up with online poker developments, you probably know that players have grown very suspicious of motives behind PokerStars’ actions. The company claims they want to improve the economy and attract more players to the game.

A part of the community seems skeptical.

Quite a few players over on 2+2 forums are convinced that this is just another way for the company to grab a bigger share of the profits, not only through the rake but through micro-transactions involving buying power-ups and physical card decks.

It is hard to say who has a point here. It’d be futile to discuss if PokerStars are primarily concerned about the company’s profit. What company isn’t? At the same time, gimmicks like these can create a breakthrough and lead to poker being accepted by much wider audiences.

Will it be poker we know and love?
Perhaps not, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. If the new Power Up poker is a game of skill, which it well might be, then it might require some adjustments, but there is no reason to think it couldn’t be another way to make a profit for the most skilled ones.
And, it looks like a lot of fun, which is definitely a plus.

Whar do you think about it?

here is what I found about the special power-up cards

Clone – receive a copy of the last power played this hand
Disintegrate – Destroy a targeted board card dealt this street
EMP – prevent powers on this street
Engineer – choose the deck’s next card from three options
Intel – view the deck’s top card for the rest of the hand
Reload – redraw selected hole cards
Scanner – view the top two cards in the deck; choose whether to discard them
Upgrade – draw a third hole card, then discard one
X-Ray – force all opponents to expose one hole card

Poker in its usual sense of the year loses its appeal to many players. This is due to 1) the crisis in the whole world, 2) the emergence of optimal strategies and a lot of regular players, 3) allocation of individual countries in the pools of players, etc. Due to the number 2, the appearance of new types of poker - it's not so bad. If you recall spin and go, the appearance of this format very seriously revived the poker community, which gave additional profit poker rooms and the creation of new shares. Therefore, in this matter I am more inclined to the opinion of Daniel Negreanu, that this format will be at least fun)), though the skills and will have a much lower value. In any case, a serious outflow of players played the disciplines you will not, and the fact that there will be more recreational players only plus that from time to time will go and see all the disciplines of poker.

It's like a trap to lure in more potential online poker players. Pokerstars is trying to find ways in order to destroy the online competition. It's the same idea based on the terrible for me beat the clock tournaments and may the spin&gos.

Beat the clock?seriously?A zoom donkfest full with pure gamblers who seek for the easy money. I don't believe that a serious poker player can grind this in profit.

As for the powerup I don't fond the concept.Maybe it would be fun but the reasoning behind this move is explained already!

ps. There are a lot other strategic games with cards like magic, heartstone and tichu. Come on Pokerstars you are better than that :p

I don't like it at all. Leave the game the way it is without the power ups.

I quite like this idea. Looks like alot of fun :D

It doesn't replace the old poker formats, it's just an extra game besides those we have atm. And if this draws in alot of new players then that's great, poker could use an extra boost.

Am actually looking forward to give this a go, would be nice to try it out.

I kinda like this idea, It could take some of the gamblers out of the main games.
If ever implemented, I could see PS charging for the power up card packs through cash or VPPs.

This looks like they are trying to increase the luck element and reduced the skill element to try and appeal to a very different demographic. I can't see this taking off but you never know.
