What to do if a player at your table is being verbally abusive?

I had a recent situation at a large mtt tournament where a player at our table was berating other players regularly, including myself, of course. The player's comments certainly crossed the lines on multiple occasions. No one else challenged the person, but I made it clear that I didn't appreciate the barrage of insults and abusive tactics. This only brought his focus from everyone to me, which was not the desired effect. Should I have just ignored this person (he was sitting to my immediate left!) or should I have confronted him. Please weigh in.

I tend to ignore these people as long as possible...if I am no longer able to hold back...I simply call the moderator and let him/her take it from there

just mute the player and try to bust him. You don't want this to affect how your playing against him.

A lot of times others are afraid to say something just for that reason. If you can get the support of more than one person at the table its usually better. Get other people involved in the protest by saying something like "I'm sure I am not the only one here offended by your actions. I'm sure others would appreciate it if you knock it off"

I have seen this happen before and once the table rallied against the jerk he didn't say anything the rest of the tournament.

My dad taught me long ago to smile a sarcastic little smile coupled with a FU glare and chuckle under my breath . After I do that I treat them as if they don't exist , when done properly it is fairly effective.

you need to go back at him and try to be even more abusive or just completely ignore him like a badass

i just put them on mute
I don't bother saying anything to them at all.
To be honest, it doesn't take much to get on my mute list. If you use too many of those damn emoticons on carbon, i'm muting you.
I don't pay attention to 90% of the crap people say online

If it was online I would have & have before taken a screen shot of what the other player had posted and e-mailed it to support. If peeps start running their mouth in an abusive way when I play sometimes, I will turn my chat off.All it will do is put you on a tilt. Then Poof with the chips you once had.

You can always change your screen to not display the chat area. Not too hard to do. Almost as simple as turning the volume off on a TV.

The best way to handle this is simple... just felt him and send him packing- If it gets too bad ask the person nicely to stop and if it continues call the floor over.

I never have the chat window open. There are quite a few dicks out there so why invite them into your home when you're playing poker. Some of the comments from people on this forum in the last few days have proved the point too. Poker sure does attract every type of person !

I appreciate everyone's thoughts. This was actually a live tournament at a casino. Looking back, with many players either going bust or being moved to other tables, as well as our dealers being rotated, he and I were the only two original players left from the start of the tourney when our table was busted up 9 1/2 hours after we began. The good thing is, he never busted me, even though he vowed that he would.

A clearing of the throat, a stare with eyebrows up. A "excuse me would you like to say that ONE MORE ****ING TIME!!" always seems to shut them up. For me anyway.
