:joyman: I am reading The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky right now and I was wondering what would be a good follow up book. Thanks in advance:D

Onorthodox answer: The Theory of Poker. Chances are, like me, you have not caught on to many of the nuances and strategies detailed in the book. Plus, this is like the Bible, you never lose your time when you reread it. Always something new to learn.

I still haven't read one, but I guess I need to. Anybody read Hellmuth's newest?

I would add Daniel Negreanu´s "Holdem Wisdom for all players" to the list.

Sklansky's "Tournament Poker for Advanced Players". This will give you a guide to the significant differences between tournament and ring play. By the way, re-reading any of Sklansky's books is good advice. I go back on a regular basis for review and reference.

Books

Thought about getting a book or two....but curious, if you only play online poker, and a rare live game, is it a good investment? Do the same references in the books go along with online play as well? thanks~july

I second Wild Rivers advice, "tournament poker for advanced players" is an amazing book, which helped & continues to help my MTT game no-end. Ive read it front-to-back a few times, and reread a couple of chapters and I always find something I hadn't fully taken-in the previous time.

For MTT's it is the bible and slansky is the god!

For cash strategy I would personally suggest Doyle Brunsons Super System (the original). It was written 25 years ago but still beats anything Ive read written since. You just have to ignore some of the out-dated info.

hope this helps

PS: I got hold of an ebook copy of one of phil helmouths books and was very dissapointed, not a good read but I cant remember what it was called.
PPS: Julyangels, most of the references still apply and yes I would say if there are holes in your game it can be a very wise investment. There are lots of books based around online play, such as "make millions playing online poker" by matt goldman (definitely goldman, think his first name is matt). which is a great book full of solid advice and all the maths any player will ever need.

The principles of poker are the same live or online. Mike Caro's Book of Poker tells is of limited value to an online player........butHOH 1,2,and3... Gordon's Little Green and Little Blue, anything by Sklansky, all apply and can improve your game immediately, provided that you read them of course.

Yes read, re-read and read again. All I can get. It's never a waste. Just got Super System II. Cover to cover in a week. TAO of Poker is good and I enjoyed Poker Nation too. Gonna need another bookshelf soon.

Even Caro's book of Tells for Online. I can hear the chips go in with extra omph when someone's bluffing, and those avatars they seem rock solid but everyone's got a tic.;)

any book you can get your hands on because poker is a never ending game and the more you know the better you are educated at it.

Zen...

Zen and the Art of Poker: Timeless Secrets to Transform Your Game (Paperback)
by Larry Phillips

Applies Zen principles to the game of poker. The book has dramitically impoved my patience and I am particularly fond of the sections on observing the flow of the table and making peace with folding.

It is more about mastering yourself as the card player than it is a how to manual.

Cheers
I still havn't bought Super System:eek:

^^this.

I am a big fan of Vorhaus' "Killer" series.

Here are my suggestions for starter readings...

Exactly what I was going to say, I got real value out of reading these (much more than the Sklansky books). They concentrate more on how to take notes, how to choose games, when to play etc than just how to play Hold Em, so should be the perfect compliment to what you've just read. They are pretty cheap on Amazon too from what I can remember.

I would have to agree with this. I didn't care for the Tao of Poker. There are several books out there that are really bad, a total waste of money. Some of the books mentioned here weren't ones I would recommend.

I forgot to add, there is a section here on books. This forum gives good advice. Take a look at that section and decide that sounds like it would help you the most. Those are the book(s) you need to get.
