Some of you may remember that I have an old dinosaur computer. Here's myproblem. It ain't small. I was p[laying a lot of poker on bodog, carbon poker, and a couple of others. Now some of the sites I realy liked do not support Windows 98.

can't play on there sites. Now I'm looking aound for new ones. Also, if anyone knows who might donate computers to disabled people, I could ship them my old one and pay shipping on a newere version.
sure miss playing with you guys at bodog!!!!:(

You can get even a "decent" computer for very cheap....

Like mine I bought 2 years ago ($1600?), which was SO good 2 years back... now is worth like $800? and it still rocks :p

What im trying to say is go check out a futureshop or bestbuy whatever and you can buy minumum spec pc's for cheap.

Im sure a basic PC will run you no more than $300-400, I know for a fact my Dad bought a decent PC for that price, from one of those places.

And ummm windows 98... jeez I dont even see that at schools anymore, seriously consider upgrading to something that isn't from 1998. Your talking about a 9 year old OS... its no surprise many are not supported.

upgrade your operating system if nothing else! aka windows XP :p

If you know anyone with extensive computer experience you could go get a nice quality computer cheap from one of those wholesale places where you have to assemble the comp yourself and have your friend help you.

Check the personal ads in your local paper. Many folks have this 'best on the block' mentality, and replace their PC's at the drop of a connection. Often they only replace the main unit, not the monitor, nor even the keyboard. You can get these 1 or 2 year old systems cheap.

Also look for Freecycle in your local area. Do a google on it.

I don't think those places exist any more. I used to assemble computers for others when they were running over $2K. Now, they are so cheap you can't buy the components for less than an assembled unit.

They have a couple stores out here in Winnipeg, I would have went the assembly way if I had known someone that would know how to assemble one, would have saved me around $700.

SAVED around $700? A new computer shouldn't COST $700. Visit Circuit City or equivalent and look around.

Just take some of your poker winnings and buy a new computer. You can even get a laptop from dell for about $500. I buy a new one every 6 months or soo.

Laptops are getting cheaper and better. I just bought a new HP/Compaq for $400 and change. It's got all the "horsepower" I need. It also has a built in wireless modem and it's amazing how usefull that becomes. As for your old box, may I suggest you check to see if there's a Ronald McDonald House in the Chicago area? I bet they would welcome the contribution.

It all depends on what you want. To be honest, you are both correct.

If you want to just get the bottom of the line model, the cheapest one possible, you simply can't beat the prices of the ones that have the sound card and video card built into the motherboard. My Brother in law and his wife wanted a computer and they picked out one of those bare bones entry level systems (like the cheapies they sell at best buy etc) and I couldn't build it for the price they were selling it for.

That said, I built mine myself, and when I built it, it was the equivalent to the top of the line Alienware models and I literally saved a thousand dollars or more. SLI, water cooled cpu and gpu etc.

To the OP, it would be cheapest to buy a new computer as opposed to buying a new operating system. You can get a system for a couple hundred dollars that comes with XP installed, where it would cost half that much to just buy XP by itself.

Look into buying a mac book (laptop). There relativly cheap, run both windows and apple and are EXTREMELY reliable.

I unfortunatally run a dell and its starting to slow down, so go with a mac book if you want a new comp!!!
