raising

Question about proper raising and what is allowed. The situation is that a player says raise, moves $100 in chips in without calling the amount of the raise. Someone asks the amount and the player that raises puts in another $100 in chips then states $2oo raise. Is this allowed?

from my experience the amount of chips in the persons hand that he moves forward with is the amount of the bet, but this may vary according to house rules. It also depends on if he has put the money in the pot or just playing with his chips in front of him. I believe he can play with his chips and anounce any amount if he hasnt moved forward with any towards the pot.

Wouldn't that be string-raising, and unacceptable because it could be used to gauge the reaction of one's opponents?

Yes, I believe you're right, chinchilla. It's string-betting, and is not allowed to my knowledge. I think if you raise, you have to put all the chips you're raising with at the same time. I think. :biggrin:

Not only is it a string bet which is not allowed, it's a call not a raise. Let say someone makes a bet for $25. Then, a player just puts in $100 and says nothing. It's considered a call and should take $75 back because the player did not say "raise." That's the way my table views it anyway.

Thats correct, played yesterday and a player (newbie) put in the most blatent string bet that i have ever seen. He was re-rerasisng by raise on the river, sid call, put out his chips then raised, then said "actually hold on, i might as well go all in while im at it" I was holding the nut flush, but i still stopped him and only allowed the call. Rules are rules.

You know it the old movies they would say "I call your bet and raise you Blah Blah Blah"? In real life can't do it, not in a casino anyways. That would be considered just a call/trying to string bet.


NLHE table player says raise but hasn't announced an amount can't he get chips then get more? Or is this a string bet also?
