I dont think, there is any right or wrong way to do this, and I have gone back and forth on this a number of times. But the system, I eventually settled on, is this one:

* Yellow for fish (VPIP 40% or higher)
* Orange for semi-loose passive (VPIP of 20-40%, large gap between VPIP and PFR)
* Grey for TAG and NIT (VPIP less than 20%)
* Blue for LAG (VPIP higher than 20% and low gap between VPIP and PFR)

The stats are for full ring. For 6-max I use grey up to a VPIP of 25%. This is by no means perfect, for instance some players with a grey tag can be insanely passive like a 14/1 or a 16/2, which is certainly not the same as a 18/15.

Even fish can be very different. A 62/38 is not the same as a 72/3. But I find, that this cover my needs, while being simple enough to execute. Basically yellow / orange means "go", blue means "danger", and grey means "stay away".

Everything is much simpler with me. Dangerous players are all my red. The player playing carefully and on the map is green. The players are weak and so-so playing after the sleeves are yellow. And I always have notes on them what they found and with which card.

I am using a HUD (PT4), and will typically start putting labels on players after 20 hands or so. For a non HUD-user you could look for tells like limping into the pot, frequent donk bets and weird bet sizes to identify the fish. If you only play a single table, its also not that difficult to notice, if someone is involved in nearly every hand. If I play on non-HUD tables, I will still try to label the fish, while I will basically give up my other labels, because its just to difficult to separate TAGs, LAGs and SLPs without HUD-data.

I use color coding both for the styles of playing AND for the specific move(s)/leaks players tend to do/have, which I would like to be aware of. I mean, I prefer these moves/leaks to be brought to my attention immediately, once I see the certain color attached to a player, more than to see what style the player has (this can be easily determined by other factors). It doesn't really matter which ones exactly I use (and as far as I noticed, they differ on different limits), so determine yourself what suits you.

I almost never change the basic settings and I usually use the application interface as it is. I think there are more important things that can affect my game than color tuning. But, of course, this is a personal choice for each player.

quick question again, I once had equity lab open by mistake and poker stars sent me a warning email. So what i'm asking is are HUDs universerly allowed??

No. Some sites allow them, others dont. Its pretty simple in the sense, that the more serious producers of trackers like HM or PT naturally comply with the requirements of poker sites. So if HUDs are not allowed on a certain site or in certain games like 888 Pokers SNAP, it will not work on those sites / games.

I never use colour coding or keep notes.

I found it a waste of time or it could be that I am just lazy
