Hi, I just read there's only three states in the US where you can legally play poker online..
I am just starting out online and downloaded pokerstars tonight but it hasn't opened yet. I'm confused about the legalities. Can anyone explain it to me please?

If you are in the USA it seems that today you can only play at PokerStars from New Jersey. But I think only against other people from Jersey.

From a Google search:

There are currently 3 states that offer legal online poker in the United States - New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware. Pennsylvania is scheduled to join this group in 2019.

WSOP/888 US is currently the only poker site that shares online poker players between all three legal online poker states (NJ, Nevada & Delaware). It’s currently the #1 US online poker site by traffic.

Poker Stars – New Jersey only
Party Poker – New Jersey only
Pala Poker – New Jersey only

There are other sites that accept US citizens:

BetOnline Poker
ignition Poker
intertops Poker
Americas Cardroom
Bovada Poker
BlackChip Poker
SportsBetting Poker
True Poker

The later list is "gray area - sites". Read up on them before you decide to play.

For Pokerstars you need to be in state of New Jersey to play for real money.

The market is segregated though so if playing from there you have to use the Pokerstars.nj client and the player pools are players from that state only.

Everyone else in the US is restricted to play money games only.

Yes, in New Jersey you can play in online casinos only if you are in the state. By the way, not all casinos that are available in other states are available in New Jersey. There is a special registration procedure with a physical representative in the state. The list of legal casinos can be found on special profile platforms, for example, I like playnj.com and slots-nj.com most of all. There are lists of only legal casinos, and their regulation is very strict. The main difference in the casino, as it seems to me in the opening bonuses and loyalty programs, as the other aspects seem very similar.
