Is online play the same as live play? I think live poker is better than online poker because people play hands online that they wouldn't in a live game.

Frankly, I like live play better. I don't claim to have any polished ability to read opponents, but I find that I play tighter, better poker live than online. I also like the more relaxed atmosphere, talking with those beside me, and the waitresses bringing me drinks! I think live play is just more fun. More importantly, I think there is more loose money in live play than in online play...lost of retired folks wanting a little action, folks who would never play online and play very loose and passive.

Let me illustrate what I talked about, above. I just got back from my local casino. This is my 5th trip this winter. On the first trip I played $1/$2 No Limit Hold'em. I bought a Coke just before arriving at the casino and left it in my truck. 2 hours and $200 later, I was on my way home and the Coke hadn't even had time to get warm! The No Limit games are populated with decent to very good players who will put you to the test for all your chips in a heartbeat. Before the second trip, I decided that a change of game plan was in order. I played $2/$4 Limit for 7 hours on $100 and ended up winning $20. The 3rd trip, I won $130. On the 4th trip, $70 (after being up over $150), and today I won $190.

Again, I make no claim to be a great player. But, the trick to beating these games is tight, solid poker. Believe me, you will be the only tight player at these tables....75% of the time there will be 6-9 players seeing the flop. Almost no one folds, so don't even bother raising until you think you have the nuts or near nuts...then punish them. Beware...Granny will play any two cards to the river and will occasionally hit her runner, runner straight to beat the set that you hit on the flop (happened twice to me today). But, this loose, reckless play is what makes you money over the course of a 6-8 hour session. Tight play means you won't win as many pots as those playing loose. But, you will save a ton of chips by not chasing rainbows and the pots that you do win will be very healthy ones.

In my experience with live play at lower money levels, No Limit is dominated by players powered by testosterone. If you want to "prove" yourself, play No Limit. If you want to make money, play Limit. I have found the 2 cent/4 cent and 5 cent/10cent Limit tables online MUCH tougher to beat than the $2/$4 Limit tables at my local casino.

I've never played poker live, so that gives a really useful insight :)

It wouldn't matter how long I left a can of coke in my car during winter, it still wouldn't warm up :D

Those two things can not compare. Internet poker is dynamic/faster, juiced, rigged and whatnot, and live games are slow, loose, not rigged. Last time I played live four hours, and got only two usable hands ... played only one of them (table was too loose, I had to fold AQs pre-flop), doubled up, and finished that poker night succesfully ... too bad nearest casino is 250 km from my town, if it were closer, I would never play online again

I love playing live, especially against a group of known opponents. It allows you to make so many more moves, just because you have history with your opponents.

Online is just sorta grinding. Its fun I suppose, just because you see a lot of hands, but I pretty much play everything standard, since your opponent is more often than not an unknown.

Ranger I've played a lot of low limit poker and all it does is frustrate you. Early last summer I had a 3 week stretch of really good cards. During that time I played very tight and conservative. A couple weeks later when the cards dried up, I was still playing the same way. The key to low limit is other people not catching their draws, it has little to do with you. Patience does have a ton to do with it, but it wont matter how patient you are after you bet out with pocket kings and a person hits their gutshot on the river. If people arent hitting their draws, a tight style will usually pay off. When I'm playing low limit(very rarely nowadays), I try to intimidate the table by acting very angry all the time and subtley calling out those who chase draws. I hope this tactic will cause folds later on instead of calls. Play no limit, you gain experience and can make more money by being patient and hopefully getting just a few good cards.

And dont get me started on the people who find 2/4 limit to be the hardest game ever to figure out. At the tables I've been at, theres been people who are there over an hour who cant figure out, INCREMENTS OF 2 PREFLOP AND AFTER THE FLOP AND 4 AFTER THE TURN AND RIVER. These people look at the dealer like they're speaking Chinese after the turn they want to raise and only put out $6.

Well if this is the case we're pretty well off at the low limits. I'll put my money on people missing more draws than they make in the long term any day. Actually I already do ;).

Basically, single hands and sessions? Luck. Long-term results? Not luck. If you are betting on them missing their longshot draws, you are betting on the concept of regression to the mean. I'll put my money on math, hasn't failed me so far :)

I do a lot better when playing live, i have no idea why or how, i just do. Its probably because i am able to pick up tells from players but also because you get more people in casinos there for a good time who dont know how to play.

Also you can punch someone who makes a bad play in live

You are exactly right. But, I would disagree in one respect...it does have a lot to do with me...or anyone else playing at these low dollar, Limit Hold'em tables. As you noted, it is all about being the kind of tight, patient player that waits for good cards. Yes, the cards may dry-up for a period of time. Yes, Granny may hit her River gutshot, but I've also seen those same things happen at No Limit tables. The big difference, to me, is that I didn't loose a big chunk of my bankroll when it happens. And, as Zachvac pointed out, most of these draws won't hit, so, if I stay patient and don't tilt, I will win in the long run against those folks who play any two cards and can do it without risking my bankroll. Being patient and not tilting, however, is the HARD part!

Over the long term it probably does even out and I'm definitely ahead, but I wasnt really good about maintaining my total over the summer so I'm not really sure.

It's not only draws these idiots chase, over Christmas break I was at the Hard Rock in Tampa. It was my last night in town so me and my friends went to the casino, I ended up playing $2/$4. Long story short, guy hit a miracle river gutshot that cost me half my stack. Lost half the remaining stack due to blinds/missing flops with decent cards. Got pocket kings, early position raise, flop has all low cards, raise again. Put my last $4 in blind before turn because thats all I can do. Turn is an ace, I hope my raising chased the weak aces away. But no, a kid called with A 8, unsuited and with no draws. He was chasing nothing except a 3 outer. Believe me I understand that in the long run it will pay off but its extremely frustrating seeing terrible players raking in pots off of miracle catches. I understand this happens in no limit too, but there(at least in live $1/$2 no limit where I play) you can almost always push them off by betting enough.

I think its easier to lose your chips online than it is live because an all in is only a mouse click away so i prefer live but like online 2.

Live play has my vote. The whole casino atmosphere alone is enough for me, not to mention the ability to get real reads off of people. The loss of tells in online poker is a drag. On the flip side though there is something to be said about the convenience of online play.

live play is more fun.

i also think live and online poker are two totally different things. it's like nba basketball compared to fiba basketball. pretty much the same rules but it looks and feels completely different and you need a different skill set to be successful in each of the two.

Live and online have different advantages/disadvantages in limit HE

Advantages Live

- Players are far looser on average than online
- You can pick up physical tells
- Generally more post-flop action
- More social/Entertaining

Disadvantages Live
- Tipping (an extra bonus rake on top of the already high live rake)
- Usually a higher rake or table fee than online
- Much slower hands per hour than online
- You have to usually drive somewhere to get there(!)

Live.

Went to the Taj and Showboat in A.C. this past weekend. Loved the experience and feel of live poker. Lots of money to be made at 1/2, of course I lost most of my bankroll though. It was my first time and I didn't realize that raises of 4-5x BB would keep at least 50% of the players in the hand. Took me all day to figure out how to play (it was my first time live) so I'm excited to go back with the right game plan (just need to keep winning the bar freerolls and build some bank back up).

The thing is this: a lot of people playing live are either doing so on vacation, don't play that often and just wanted to give it a try, have lots of money and like the rush of winning big pots no matter how many times they buy in, will call pretty much anything...blah blah blah blah...

People online seem to be there for a reason and purpose: to try and win at poker. This doesn't neccessarily mean that they have to be better players, but a far greater amount of players online haven't ended up at the tables just by a matter of circumstance.

After this weekend I might have to go out on what some would call a limb and say .05/.10 is harder and a more difficult game to beat than some 1/2 games at the live casino's. Anyone agree?

I think I have more fun playing live, but online does have its advantages (action at lots of levels whenever you want it, relative anonymity, don't have to leave home, etc).

it all depends on where your at. i bought in a nl tourney for 100 bucks on this casino boat thing. well that day pretty big waves out there guy betting into me is throwing up in a bag and not to mention they totally overbooked the tourney. having 90 players on 7 tables....starting out i think we had 14 players at our table i mean 28 cards getting dealt out...thats ridiculous. worst live game ever. i would rather play in a 50 dollar freeroll where you had to buy your way in for 20 bucks online than play in that tourney again. i did pretty good tho.

Likminutz: I agree. A 2 cent/4 cent or a 5 cent/10 cent game online is much tougher to beat than a $1/$2 No Limit, or my preference $2/$4 and $3/$6 Limit. If you think that the No Limit live games are lose, try the Limit Games!
