You don't have to live in NJ to play. You just need to be in NJ while playing.

There are a lot of poker players in NJ - and also a lot of them in surrounding states. We may see some of them moving so that they can play both live and online.

There are also a lot of players who have re-located to canada to play online - with the new issues there we could see some of them moving back.

In the end it will depend on how good the software is and like you mentioned if enough players are in the player pool.

I live in New Jersey, and I've tried with party poker, but it's broken. Every time I register my account it says that I'm not in New Jersey...

I'm currently trying to register my account with 888, but I'm not too sure about it, being that they are asking for my Social Security Number...

EDIT: I have registered for 888, but it uses the same thing as Party Poker. It's a plug-in that is broken as hell that tries to validate whether or not you are in New Jersey. Both times, it has said that I am not.....which is complete BS.

Screw this/them. I'm just going to continue on Bovada and Black Chip.

I play with borgata poker and caesars wsop

Which do you like best and what do you like/dislike about them?

There have been reports of geolocation issues, borgata poker registration issues and players questioning NJ online poker verification safety.

online poker rooms in NJ

Just wanted to mention a few things about online poker rooms in NJ right now for those that are interested. Legal poker is great, but some things are still a pain in the rear. Here are some of the big problems we are experiencing.

Location verification is a huge issue for many players. Loads of players in NJ cant even play because the poker rooms keep saying they are not in NJ. For me, sometimes it lets me play and sometimes I cant. poker sites verify location through wifi connection and cell phone service (or so they say). This means that hardwired internet will not work unless you have wifi capabilities. Additionally, your wifi must detect at least three other networks in order to validate your location. My home office only detects 1 wireless connection so I couldnt verify my location. The online rooms say they also use cell phones for backup verification with SMS, but I never got any texts. Luckily, my laptop detects several wireless connections so I can play most of the time on it, although it still says Im not in NJ at random times.
I live in Jersey City so there are plenty of wireless connections around but this is going to suck for players in suburban or rural areas who cant pick up three or more wireless connections.

But so far there are some great things with legal poker. Many rooms are giving no strings attached bonuses for signing up (well, the only restriction is that you cant simply withdraw the free cash obviously). Caesars WSOP room gave me $10 to play with, and Borgata poker gave me a nice $50 to play with.
Aside from having trusted names to put your money with, the withdrawal process looks much easier now. You can withdraw using the same method you deposited with, or you can go to the casino and pick up a check at the window. Also, the casinos are not charging any fees for withdrawals, which is super awesome considering how overseas rooms are ripping off Americans. Some rooms claim you will get your money in 2 or 3 days tops.

We are still in the early stages, but I'm sure we are a ways off from optimizing the system here in NJ. But having a safe and reliable place to put money is a huge plus, and I'm sure it may be worth it for some professional players to move to Jersey for that.

The traffic is decent for now, but Im sure it will pick up much more as the system here gets smoothed out.
As for live poker, I dont think that will have a big impact for online. If anything, people will play live less. People dont always want to drive 2-3 hours to AC just for a quick game.

I will be going to AC much less for sure.

I like Borgata poker much, much more. My first impression was that I like the software so much more, but they also gave me $50 to start with (which I thought must have been an error because the ad says $20 - but so far no problems).

I was originally predisposed to like Caesars WSOP better because I always played live at Harras and sometimes Caesars, but I definitely wasnt too crazy about the software.

How is your SSN tied to your address? And where in the regs does it say you have to live in NJ to play?

Look all I know is I entered my current address and then my SSN and it said SSN does NOT match my current address, so somehow they are linking it. I then put in my old apartment address for now till I can straighten it out (however I do that im not quite sure yet?) and it accepted it. And WSOP.com requires you to actually live in NJ apparently, others do not. Like partypoker has it so that it just goes by your phone location. WSOP requires residence.

The SSN is not tied to your address exactly, but it is tied to your state ID (i.e.- drivers license). You must put the address that is on your license.

This cannot be the case either because my new address was actually the same address I have on my license. I lived with my mother a couple years ago after moving back from Georgia and so I got a NJ license with her address, then I moved to my apt, then she moved and gave me her house. So my license has this address, but apparently my SSN is linked to my old apt address.

Thats strange because when I signed up I put my new address and the site said to put the address printed on my state ID, which was my old address.

It's likely not broken. You probably have some sort of VPN software (remote access) running on your computer. If you do, you will not be allowed to play and the reason displayed will be that you're not in NJ --- even if you are.

Make absolutely sure that you're playing on wifi and that you have no remote access software running.

Weird, because I am playing on wifi and there isn't any remote access software running. It STILL says I'm not in New Jersey.

I got curious and checked the facebook sites for many of these new NJ poker sites and tons of people seem to be having the same problem I am. Idk what's up.

Gonna try Borgata....see what happens.

Give it a couple weeks to sort the issues out...we had the same problems with verification in Nevada but things did get better after a little while.

Both SSN and wifi seem to be ridiculous ways to verify state residency.

As far as detecting nearby wifi networks, that doesn't prove anything at all about residency -- their software cannot connect to just any other network to access their IP addresses or anything else beyond their SSID. There is no geolocation information contained in an SSID. So the existence of nearby hotspots has absolutely ZERO to do with where you are physically located. All they can detect and go by is the IP address you're logging in from (and IP geolocation is hardly precise and reliable, but for most people will give a reasonable proximity). Not to mention a large number of people with modern homes use hardwired ethernet connections because it's both faster and more reliable than wifi. Every room in my house is hardwired -- wifi is only used for mobile devices. So they're cutting off a large portion of their market if this is true.

Also, SSN is not a reliable indicator of address either. Certainly not from where you applied for your SSN, because you only get one in life and it's issued based on the state where applied (typically your birth state), and doesn't change. There's no law that says you have to update your SSN info when you move. However your current address can find its way back to the SSA when you get a job or file a tax return. Still, that leaves a sizable segment of the population that wouldn't have a current address on file with the SSA.

Both of the above major limitations make it seem very unlikely they would hobble themselves like this. I think it very likely that location problems are due to something else. As was suggested, maybe they're detecting VPN or remote desktop software and shutting down for that. And it's likely they're keeping mum or spreading misinformation about what they do, just to reduce the opportunities for it to be exploited.

And for those concerned about being asked for an SSN... really? You do realize they ask for SSN because of tax reporting requirements and also the Patriot Act requires any institution handling funds in the US to capture SSN's. Most online poker sites that have served US players already required your SSN anyway. Very few did not. If you go to any live us casino and have any sort of sizable score you will be required to give them your SSN too.

Ssn is used to confirm your birthdate and name... Not your adress.. Seems pretty nice 888 is the first with an iphone App that works decent.. Borgata gave me a $50 cash sign up bonus.. Standard was $20 but i signed up early and got an email for the $50.. Theyre offering 100% up to $600 match on first deposit, 888 is only $400.. Borgata you have to cash out at the casino right now while 888 will put up to your original deposit back on your credit card..

I like how borgatas site is set up and the software is decent.. Ive had friends tell me its frozen up on them a couple times already.. Seems like it will be easy to earn comps and get my comps up through them.. Prolly will be my go to site..

888 has a big advantage with iphone app out Already.. Ive heard alot of complaints about the location check here... Im on the very east coast of NJ and havent had any problems with my location verification although i did have a friend right down the street from me who had a problem at his house.. I read of you have any VPN software on your computer it will affect it..

I downloaded the wsop software but havent played it or any others yet.. I plan on tryin all of them within the next week or so and will post a more detailed feedback on all the nj sites when i get a chance
