Newbie gets massacred in R&A tournament

I signed up for a tournament tonight not knowing rebuys and add-ons were available (and not being 100% clear on what they even were), but came away with a lesson learned. After realizing my mistake I figured I could either automatically kiss my $10 buy-in goodbye or just go for it... ended up doing a couple of rebuys and the add-on, and $40 later finished a not-so-fabulous 193rd of 426.

My most expensive poker lesson yet....

If that's the most expensive lesson you ever learn, you'll have gotten out damned cheaply.

The upside of rebuys is the increased payout. True, they give someone who played his/her
hands badly another shot and they lengthen the time played.

But, if rebuys are permitted, and you know that upfront (it's usually posted somewhere
or if it's not, you can always ask), then you've got a choice of playing or not.

Personally, I like the bigger payouts.

I hate them too! Funny thing though the first tournament I ever won (Omaha Hi) I was the ONLY one of about 300 players who didn't rebuy or add on at all! Very good night with a lot of guys talking to themselves. roud:

The bigger payout is certainly attractive -- I think the top money for this one was around $3,000. I wouldn't mind giving this type of play another shot after I become a better player. Just wasn't prepared for it last night... shouldn't have signed up in such a hurry and will be more careful next time.

Ive never played in a re-buy tourney online, played once live but only one re-buy was allowed. The idea of unlimited re-buys does not really appeal to me, does it make the game very loose ???

The payout sounds very good, and im not one to critise something until i try it. So ill have a shot at a re-buy some evening next week and ill let you know my final opnions then.

And that was by no means and expensive poker lesson, probably the cheapest and best youll ever get. I know one guy that won a house.....playing 5 card draw.......

It did seem to, especially in the beginning, and to a lesser extent up until the break.

Won a house playing 5 card draw? A house, as in something you live in??

Party P has a glitch in their R&A tourneys. If you are all-in you can rebuy...since all of your chips are in the pot the software views your stack as ZERO.

I saw a guy do this 3x before the first break. This put him at 4K plus his wins (not much). Then the Addon he was at 6K...LUCKY for ME I busted him out.

4 fees and a rebuy fee....crazy..I see a strategy somewhere

One tip i will give you in a rebuy tourney is if you are short stacked coming up towards the add on time then chuck your chips in with pretty much anything.If you double or triple up then thats great if not you can rebuy and take an add on when the time comes.e.g.if you have 5/6 hundred chips when you add on you'll have 1500/1600,might as well take a chance with them as if you lose you can rebuy and add on which will give you 2000.The extra chips may just make the difference between placing or not.This only works if you have the cash and are confident about your game,if you feel out of your depth just take a beating and get out.

I love rebuy tournaments, but I never rebuy.

Almost everyone ina rebuy tournament is looking for easy double ups. Everyone is playing incredibly loose. So how do you win? Play extremely tight aggressive! When you make a great hand, preferably one that would be hard to beat or isn't beatable, put people all-in! It's hard NOT to get callers. If I lose my chips in a rebuy tourney I'm done, I don't rebuy. usually i don't have to though. I never add-on either. i figure if I don't have enough chips to play with at that stage then an extra 1500 isn't gonna help, that's only 8 big blinds after the add-on where i play.

well with stud i play on paridise 7 seas r&a ill rebuy if its early an adoon at the break i will not addon if im down in the line waste of money
