They only advertise the play-money sites (.net) on TV, so they get around the prohibition of putting gambling ads on TV (I assume that it is illegal, like cigarettes). Of course, once you're online, they make it easy to switch over to the real money site (.com). Kind of pointless to prohibit it in the first place, but I guess with underaged viewers, it's necessary. Somehow, I don't think all those pros are playing on FullTilt.net or pokerstars.net, so it's misleading at best but more like a lie. Advertisers lie? Whoa, I've never heard of that.

Alright, I'll give you a little insider information on this.

I work for a cable television sports network (sorry can't name names because I like my job- lol) that televises poker as an operations manager.

The legality of running commercials in the United States for online poker ventures is vague and questionable. Just like the status of online poker itself.

I can't speak for all the networks, but we have a set of "standards and practices" that we enforce on all our producers and suppliers to meet both legal and self imposed standards. We consider ourselves to be a "family friendly" network and as such be profit same thing permissable under the law.

We have a division called "standards and practices" that views every program prior to it going to air and sends a list of changes that need to me made back to the producer before they will clear it for air.

I've actually seen things like "delete close up shot of breasts of woman in pink bikini" and "discrete blur the top of player crotch area" in these emails.

Okay. So to my point.

In one of these emails the reviewer said that the producer needed to be prepared to blur the images of a ceratin poker rooms logo. The reviewer had not yet had the opportunity to fully vet the website (.net) to make sure it fully met the standards as established. Amongst other things the .net website can not offer anything other than a "learning" environment. It can not even offer freerolls to win money.

Please note that these standards are pretty much self-imposed and not government imposed. The networks do this to protect themselves but there is no specific FCC or government mandate on this.
