Hi all,
I have asked a simular question some time ago, but I haven't found a solution to this as of yet.
I am visually impaired and I and others want to play real poker.
The problem is that most of the poker sites don't offer keyboard access to the game.
However, I have found a few but then they don't have keyboard commands for taking a seat.
The animations are the biggest problem. Since we rely on speech and or braille text is a very important thing. Some poker sites shows the cards in the chat box but i haven't found a poker site that shows both my pocket cards as well as the other cards.
So my question is, does anyone have a suggestion on a poker site that i might want to try?
Me and others really hope that the developers could do something to improve the accessibility. We can provide details.
Any help is apreciated!
Many thanks!

I remember this topic from before and as I recall it didn't go very far back then. Good to bring it up again, though. I think it is reasonable for anyone that wants to play to have access. Have you tried contacting any of the poker sites directly to see if they can help or direct you elsewhere?

Hello,
Many thanks for your reply!
Yes, I have contacted several sites with no interest from them. I have always been told that my comments have been forwarded to the right person but then i have got no more replies.
I have then waited a few weeks maybe a month before sending another email asking what happened with the same result.
This is really sad.
Maybe someone who is a programmer could write some kind of plugin or software that could monitor the activity from the poker client and send the information to the screen reader. This is possible since the screen reader offers programs the ability to communicate directly with it.
Many thanks,
Chris

Hmmmm....a much better use of my time than writing a 'bot' :D
Do you have a favorite site or any that you have an account on now?

BTW: I thought titan, nobel, cd poker et. al. showed hole cards in the chat box... maybe it's an option that you need to turn on:confused:

Full TIlt does show both hole cards in the chat box. It is one of the few who do.

I can imagine you are just the tip of an iceberg of players with challenges.
Not to be insensitive, but I have been sure at times I was playing against players who had to blow through a tube to bet.
The point there being most sites would probably prefer to facilitate the moving along of the games. Speed means better rake ratios for them.

This however might be a great tool for you. In regards to the new US laws, I would guess that the sites still here would want to do everything they could to bring added pressure on the Lawmakers to recind that nasty legislation.

Play that angle, and let us know.

personally i just like the setup of full tilt poker the best out of any ive tried, they have freerolls every 2 hours, not just holdem which is good and a lot of websites sponser freerolls there, along with that you can still deposit through certain ways. but i think it's the best, growing website out there at the moment

Hello,
No, i do not have an account on any specialsite. i have signed up to several just to find out that it doesn't work.
Do you know if any of the sites you talked about have keyboard access?
Another problem is that some of them don't use standard Windows controls for list views and tabs in their lobbys.
Many thanks for your help!

Too bad I didn't see the thread earlier...
I am playing on bwin (betandwin) and think that it's about the best software you can find. I don't know whether it suits all your needs, but you should check and try...

P.S. It's ONGAME network with a few dozens of sites. However, I don't know whether all those sites use same poker client, so you should try bwin first.

Chris I did a quick google search for you and came up with a couple of things. Maybe you're aware of them maybe not, I thought I'd share in case you haven't.

First there is a poker place made specificly for blind people called "all in play" it can be found here.

Welcome to All inPlay. Play Accessible Games Online. Try Free

Unfortuneately its only free/play money but I would enquire with thier staff and see if they know the status of any available sites or software that could help you get to real money play.

Here's an article about them in poker news, it sounds promising.

Blind Man's Bluff: Online Poker for the Blind | Poker News

Here's another article which may be helpful.

BlindNews:COMPANY BUILDS GAME PLAN TO HELP BLIND

And an e-mail adress of some one else who might give better advice.

cook@globe.com

I don't know if this helps but I applaud your ambition and determination, I have a good friend who is blind. I keep encouraging him to learn his computer better and explore the online world but he's rather comfortable in his situation and don't care to make the effort.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for your replies!
The bwin.com do they only offer a Java client?
Is this correct?
I have been trying to download their client with no luck. If it is Java, then it is not accessible either.
Many thanks,
Chris

Well, if you are on linux or Mac machine, the answer is - I don't know.
However, if you're using Windows, I can guarantee you - there is a normal client. I am playing on it.

I have been trying to download their client with no luck. If it is Java, then it is not accessible either.
I had a problems too. If I remember correctly, it was their Adobe Flush responsible - I didn't have a latest version at the time.
Try next day or two; if not successful, I'll email you an installation program. It's less than 300Kb long. I don't know whether is going to work, but it's certainly worth a try.

However, there is one more possible problem - American IP. I hope it's not that...

P.S. You could also try pokerroom.com I can't guarantee for them, but their software looks very similar.

Hi,
Many thanks for your reply.
I contacted Bwin's customer service and I think it is the same as pokerroom.com when it comes to accessibility.
You can use the function keys to call, fold and raise but not take a seat.
I really apreciate your help and if you have any other suggestion or find something else, please let me know. Me and others want to join in the fun!
Thanks a lot,
Chris

Hey Chris,

I'm also blind. I've been trying to find a place to play as well. I played on AllInPlay for a year until I got tired of playing with people who don't know what they're doing. I've sent emails to some mainstream sites and had the same result as you.

Perhaps we could try a petition. If we gathered a few hundred signatures, it might carry more weight than our occasional emails. I believe there is a way of doing this on line. I also know there are many from AllInPlay who would sign. Let me know if you think this could work.

Best,

Marcus

Hi Marcus,
First, nice to see that i am not the only one on these types of forums who is blind.
yes, I have been playing at All inplay as well, but not renewing that much anymore. Want to play on the big sites both for real and playmoney.
Yes, I think you have a good point there. I have asked several of my other blind and visually impaired friends to send emails to the main stream sites.
But it doesn't seem to be enough. It's very difficult to get in touch with the developers behind the software itself. I haven't been able to do it even though i have been contacting several sites through the last year.
Also, using Jaws scripts is not the best solution to get access to the client since not all people use jaws. Needs to work with Window-Eyes as well.
Do you use MSN?
Al the best,
Chris
