Just curious of any guaranteed NLHE tournaments online out there these days that have decent overlay in them? (guar. prizepool exceeds the number of entrants buyins).

Any sites and preferably MTT's with buyins between $1 & $25.

I played an MTT last week that had a guaranteed prizepool of $175k and only had ~1,700 entrants so it had a HUGE overlay .. ~$90k. (no I didn't cash, lol.. lost a 90bb allin preflop pot w KK < AQ.. sigh...).

It got me to thinking, there used to be quite a few guaranteed prizepool tourneys online that actually had some overlay. Lately they've been harder to find. I went scouting around for some & found a few smaller buyin $1 & $2 mtts on Carbon & a few lowstakes MTT ($25-$30) on Doyles but am now wondering about others????

I did happen to notice that some of the Fulltilt $26donkaments had a bit of overlay in them (not much though), guessing probably due to the SCOOP Series running then.

Any tournaments you've come across lately? (might be kinda cool if we could get a decent list of them on here).

On FTP and PS I hardly ever see overlay tourneys except off peak hour O8/stud/razz/horse 10-26$ tourneys that might have a few hundred/thousands in overlay.

But on sites like everest,Ipoker(only off euro peak hour) and even sometimes on cerues you get some decent overlay if your looking for it.

But the main problem with trying to find overlay tourneys on a forum is that as soon as some one posts "hey that tourney has overlay" its gonna fill up pretty fast.
Trick is probably trying to track them down and treat them like a secret ;).

I've always wondered, why do sites keep running tourneys with constant overlay, they like losing money?

So in that $175 K tourney, the site had to lose $90K? (- the rake it got from the buy-ins I guess). Well I know poker rooms make alot of money but enough to not care about losing $90K in a few hours....doubt it

They dont. Usual reason for overlays are either its part of a promo, for some reason the site has less trafic then usual or they simply overestimated how many people would play.

Sites (almost) allways decrease the gurrantee as soon as they realize the have overlay.

Thanks, that makes more sense. I just marveled at that $90K, totally off the charts

Yea - I never see them at PS or FT anymore. And if you did see them posting them here would not be a great idea - they won't last long with overlay anyway and this wouldn't help. But a more private place..... :)

The rake they got from the buyins ($50+5) was only $8,565.00 (1,713 entrants $5 apiece).

Got ya dakota.... point well taken ;)

Yes it would... Carbon, Reefer, all the same tourneys. Good overlay in the micros on there for sure (from what I've seen in the lobbies).

well to answer your question of overlay Poker orfice i have just started playin on sportsbook.com which i believe is also part of the merge poker network and there are quite a few low dollar buyins that i have been playin that will have a few hundred extra dollars in them. Most i have seen have only been 2,3,4 hundred extra but thats still free money that you dont have to play against. Some of the higher buyins that i have played in 20 or so range have normally ended up with to EV. Oh yeah and on sportsbook the call it EV(estimated value) and it is actually stated when you click on the tournament. Which i find to be a pretty neat deal.

The problem with trying to take advantage of overlays in the MTT's is the late registration. Its almost impossible to get in a MTT tourney close to starting time and estimate what the overlay will be. You can try to jump in very late yourself to take advantage of it, but than your miles behind the leaders when you buy in.

I sattied into this $50 Satti to the 750K earlier this week. With @ 4 hours to the start, its still shy 23 players to make the minimum.

Im sure if the minimum is met the layout will attract big $ players quickly most likely boosting win-rate up to 50% or 33% pretty fast but at the minimum of 150 of 180 or 83% winners, the Overlay in this one is very attractive.

One of the things that sort of kills overlays is late registration. So to find/make some overlay, late registration can be used to calculate a new overlay. In many tourneys, 1/2 the field is gone the first hour. If you can find a slow structure tourney where even 30% of the field is gone in the first 50 minutes or so, you can get in late with an effective large overlay due to the entrants fees exceeding the guarantees. You would want to feel comfortable coming from behind as you do start with an effective short stack, which is why you want to find the slower structured games. Since I get myself in trouble often early, I feel comfortable short stacked.:stickyman:D

I do the same dj, I feel comfortable short as well. In this one, from what Ive seen over the past 3 months I think its the $50 price tag that somewhat limits the massive additional late registrations. 50% payout is a pretty safe bet when all the smoke clears, but I will track it and post the #s here.

sometimes it can depend on the time you are playing, im sure you may not play on PP but i tend to find that in the earlier hrs of the morning the gua' pots usually dont get reached.

90 min to lift off and 208 are registered so the 180 minimum is met and 150/208 or 72% make the $216 win.

Will update again later.

But in the meantime ask yourself, "What % of the average poker crowd can I beat"?

Right now you only have to beat 28%

I'm thinking this game will top out around 300 which only leaves 1/2 the pack you have to outlast to give a $161.00 bump to your BR for the $55 risk.

So what was the total number of entrants in that one once the late reg. was over? (anything under 645 is a bonus right?).

I made this post just prior to Fulltilt increasing their late reg. in MTTs. Just prior to this I was noticing that some of the $26mtts were beginning to have overlay in them, some of them a half decent amount. That's obviously gone bye-bye now.... sigh...

I don't mind late reg. for MTTs, but don't really like it for the sattys... it's nice to know how many 'entries' are up for grabs.

I guess for overlays it'll mean playing on the less popular sites. That MiniECOOP Series had the best I've ever seen. Too bad I took some major donkings in the ones I played. The ECOOP (still running now) has less overlay in them (MainEvent this weekend... $1,500 buyin, $1.5mil guar.). Obviously won't be playing that one, lol.

Someone wrote elsewhere in the forum (pretty sure it was yesterday) about a satty that actually had some overlay on Fulltilt. Hmm... might have to go looking for it.

There ended up being 555 entrants when all the smoke cleared. I actually unregistered prior to start under the advise of a friend who was aware of what else I had scheduled for the evening.

So @27% cashed which is not too bad.
