Live play-- show one, show both??

I just saw this on WPT-- a player showed one card to David Williams and was going to muck having just shown the one but DW insisted on seeing both (and the dealer obliged) and the announcers said something about how it's a rule that if you show one card, you have to show both.

I've seen Tony G, Daniel Negreanu, and Chris Bigler only show one card and not have to show both. So which is it? Is this a universal rule or is it one that tournaments can elect to engage or not?

Depends on the venue.
