What would you guys say is the largest difference between online play and live play?
What sorts of adjustments should I be looking to make between the two?
Ohh, and which one would you guys say is more fun?

blind for blind, online is harder to play than live, which many people don't realize.

love these questions

Online vs Live. Online expect to get super bad beats, donks, laughs and more. Live is very fun too, talking in real life is funner than online. Reading is a lot easier in real life. Most of the time, people will smile or change their voice. Online........you can read people but i like to snag people. I will bet 200 on a 100% bluff. then they fold. Show my bluff. Then when i have a real good hand i will bet 200 and a lot of the times they raise thinking they have the better hand. Thats a good online strategy. Live is more fun though, and is a great game. Online can piss me off sometimes lol. I like them both though. Hope i helped you out with your question ;)

This is a post I made in response to a different thread, but felt it fitted here better. So here is a copy of it.

I have to disagree with you. For you knowing the previous betting patterns via software can be a big tell. You need to remember that most of the fish don't own software like pokerace hud/pokertacker cause they are not serious. Also I think it was Doyle Brunson who said that the most valuable tells are in the betting patterns.

This is one of my points when comparing live to online. The only game I have to worry about is the one my opponents brought to the table. Let's see how good they are without pokerace hud/pokertracker, sidekick, etc. etc. etc... My live play consists of 90% tournaments with 10% cash tables. During live play 90% of the time it’s against new opponents, without having to worry about what computer program they may be plugged into. I prefer my opponent’s knowledge is only what they’re capable of carrying between their ears. If they don’t know percentages and odds to infinity, well that’s their problem. I prefer my opponent not having a program that may sway and help them win even if it’s only one hand against me.

Also I think it was Doyle Brunson who said that the most valuable tells are in the betting patterns.

That type of information is older then he is. Learning betting patterns are both equally important and obtainable online as well as live. Again, this is a part of the game I prefer my opponents to have too count on their memory not software facts, when crossing paths more then once.

Tell’s online no doubt exist, but those same one’s are also there live. Most online tells today are common knowledge. Developing the ability of picking up human tells, is a great added bonus and could become a huge part of a game. None of the human possibility exists online. Blow it off all you want, I like the chance of having it at all.

I love online poker but I’m presently going all out with live play. I’ve had years of all out online play and I’m rather happy with the results. Yet, I want to see if live play could be even more rewarding. I’m going to give live play a good two years before drawing a conclusion. I of course will always play online, but just in satellites, and big purse tournaments for now.

online is better becaus in real life they can distract you to grab your chips lol ... no just kidding online is better because u can use lots of weapons in your advantage like pokertraker ace/hud gametime+, chek player stadistics and more which could be the equivalent for tells in rl

That's funny, because *my* biggest adjustment is not wearing my pants and underwear to play online. In live play that would be poorly received :D

Something no one mentioned is the bankroll requirement. Online, you can find a no limit holdem ring table where the big blind is 2 cents. Live, you're lucky to find one where the big blind is $2. That increases your minimum required bankroll by a factor of at least 100 if you're going to play live.

There are other obvious differences as well. In online play you can multitable while live you can't. Online I can smoke at my computer while I've yet to hear of a reputable live cardroom that allows smoking at the poker table. My online tables are in my own home while the nearest live cardroom is an hour and a half drive away. When playing live I have absolute physical control of my money and can, if there's no lineup at the wicket, convert my chips into cash in hand within 30 seconds of leaving the table, while getting money out of most online sites is a nightmare, and even the cashout-friendly sites such as Party make you provide them with your verified bank account number and then wait 48 hours. So those are major differences.
