pokerstars would like to alert everyone to a problem that will be affecting some players very soon.

For users running older versions of the software, the SSL Encryption Certificate will be expiring on May 21. If you are running the latest version of our software, this will not affect you at all. If you received an update in the last 4-5 days, then you have the newest version.

However, if you are running an older version of our software, you may not be able to connect to the server. The current version of the software is 2.487; you can check your version number by going to Help > About PokerStars in the main lobby. If the number is lower than that, you are running outdated software.

Should you not be able to connect to the server after May 21, the solution to this problem is to go to the PokerStars website and download/install the latest version.

PC users can download the latest version here:

Poker - Online Poker Games at PokerStars - Play Texas Holdem

Mac users can download it here:

Free Mac Poker Download

Once you have installed the latest version, you should be able to connect and login to the software normally.

There is an alternative (and slightly more complicated) way to get this update after May 21. If you set your system date back to May 20 or earlier, and then launch the game client from your desktop, the software will download and install only the update. After you complete the update process, you should then re-set your system date to the correct one.

We apologize for this inconvenience, and thank you for playing on PokerStars.

All the best,

Bryan S.

Looks like the links are legit though, although it seems it's easier to just start the software and let it update for you.

at least i'm not the only one who's been turned into a cold skeptic by the internet. first thought was virus or something otherwise fishy...

This may be a little overly cautious, but I'd rather be that way then be wrong. The links looked legit, but I will be confirming with Stars support just to be sure. They have been removed in the meantime. No disrespect intended, Bryan.

I just happen to think its amusing that Stars called me last week when i had my MSN issue, and told me not to open strange links, ESPECIALLY on poker forums. Then they go and post them themselves. Funny stuff.

Since PS only checks for updates when you start the App, I always wondered if this could be an issue. If someone had the client open for days, they'd still be running the old version after (most) everyone had moved on to the newer one. I guess it only causes a problem in cases like this.

While it may be a pain for people who have dial up, I download any latest version from any poker site when prompted to on log in, why wouldn't you? You could be missing out on a version that runs faster, has had a bug taken out whatever.

Actually PokerStars Support does post on and read a number of forums. This is one of the things that makes their support the best.

This is already outdated, another new version was updated today.

The SSL is 2.491 now, in case someone just decides to check and gets confused.

Yeah, I've seen them do it on other forums as well.
It's pretty cool of them to do that. It shows their commitment to being their finger on the pulse of the online poker world.

But yeah, anybody can pretend to be PokerStars so TB was right to be cautious. Some pretender could post a link to a password stealing trojan horse, which would give him the account information of anybody who was tricked into running the software. Then wham, goodbye bankroll.
