I guess it depends on how you lose.
There have been times when I was playing and I could feel myself playing impatiently and sort of forcing the game. It was easy to get up and go do something else for a while and come back later when I was ready to play quality poker.
There have also been times when I have lost several buy-ins before finally being able to tear myself away from the game. On those occasions I suffered horrible beats. Like playing something like A-K and flopping top pair, against some donkey who plays J-2 and flops a pair of deuces, then goes all-in, only to catch a Jack to make two pair on the river.
When I lose in that manner it's hard to leave the game for multiple reasons. One, I hate to let some donkey who plays like that get away with my money. Two, I know that I didn't misplay my hand, so I feel like if I shake it off and continue to play my game, I'll be able to make it back. And three, we're always told that you want to be in a game with bad players. So when you have players at the table throwing their chips around like zoo monkeys throwing their shit, that's the game that you want to be in. Right?
I once lost three buy-ins at a $200NL game in under 20 minutes. I just couldn't let donkey fart keep my money. I spent the next six hours at that table getting back to even. I got one buy in back from the zoo monkey before someone else felted him, then spent the next five hours or so playing with the second guy as other players came and went. At the end of it my back felt like someone had hit me in the spine with a sledge hammer. I had an excruciating headache. My face and torso was covered with a sticky sheen and I'm sure I smelled like flop sweat. But I left the table up $5.
The answer to your first question is simple: you are experiencing a gambling problem. Not everyone is like you, even though if you look around in a casino, most people will be like you. That's because casinos are the gathering place for people with gambling problems.
A similar situation happens in bars. Most people drinking in a bar would have a hard time walking away after only one beer, even though in the real World, there are plenty of people capable of doing just that.
The answer to the second question is vastly more complicated, because gambling issues (like the urge to continue playing in an attempt to make up for your losses) are deeply embedded into your personality aka subconscious mind, and it's virtually impossible to will yourself into poker discipline.
So with the problem you're facing, my advice to you is to stick to freerolls, play money tables, and the lowest of the microstakes where losses are easily manageable, and forget about being a consistently winning player because the odds are stacked against you. If that's not an option, then go to the casino with only the amount you're willing to lose in your pocket, make small online deposits so there isn't more to lose than you can afford, try hypnosis or self hypnosis.
