I have always wondered how some US players can play on pokerstars (excluding the ones from New Jersey).

I assumed that they used either a VPN, TeamViewer, or some sort of other network protocol in conjunction with a foreign bank account for deposits/withdrawls, but the "fullproof" method hasn't been made public for obvious reasons most likely...

Anyone have any insight on this?

They move abroad, mostly to Thailand, Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada from what I've read and obviously have bank accounts in those countries or use Bitcoin to withdraw. I think poker sites can detect when you're using VPN.

A lot of them move to places like Mexico or Canada. Don't know any other way.

Fair enough however take doug polk as an example. He is based out of nevada and plays pokerstars there. The only us based site allowed in nevada is wsop.com

Pokerstars can legally operate in New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada.

All of those still play only with local pools right?

I believe that's the case. I'm sure someone that has more knowledge than me will see this post and comment. I'm Canadian so don't follow the situation closely:)

I don't think they have PS in Nevada - and it is definitely only with local player pools for those who do.

He is not playing from the US when he plays on PS - would be ridiculously risky to blatantly stream when violating their strictest rule. PS would never let that happen.

A lot of pros have residences outside of the US and split their time between the 2.

Good fullz to go with good vpn. It's definitely not for the inexperienced, though.

I've been out of the poker scene for a couple years now. Is there any progress in getting a site like PokerStars back for US players? What gives a certain site like ACR or juicy stakes to operate for US players but not a site like PokerStars?

My guess is they don't care. Operating like they did before Black Friday. The sites aren't big enough for the DOJ to care. I'm currently grinding a roll on ACR and I'm curious how cashing out when the time comes will go. I'm playing mostly for fun anyway. Playing for play money is not poker, I live hours from a live legal place to play, so for now ACR is all I got! I can't wait for the day that PS is legal in all 50 states!!!

Basically what happened on Black Friday was, that US authorites cracked down on the operators, that were the largest in the US market, and that had assets inside US, that could be confiscated. These were PokerStars, Fult Tilt Poker and Ultimate Bet / Absolute Poker. Before then partypoker had already voluntarely left the US market, after the wire act was implemented some years earlier.

As for the sites still accepting US customers, I assume, they just keep all their assets outside of US, and choose to avoid the US banking system. I have heard of crypto currencies, which is obviously one of the ways to do it. But in principle US authorities could also try to go after these sites. As authorities have tried to go after poker sites in many ofter grey market countries.

It was part of the deal between PokerStars and US authorities after "Black Friday", that PokerStars would no longer allow people to play while in the US. This is also why, PokerStars go aggressively after US based players trying to cheat them with VPNs or whatever.

However its not your nationality or even country of residence, that determine, if you can play. Its where, you are psysically located, when you try to log on the site. For instance I have tried to log on to pokerstars.com from a swedish IP adress, which was refused with the message "we are currently not offering services in your country".

As for the situation about getting online poker regulated and legal in the US, it seem to be moving at a glacial pace. I guess, there is just to much money involved, and some influencial casino owners, who dont like to get online competition. There is also a strong religious cummunity, who is against all kinds of gambling.

Its an uphill battle, and it will hardly be easier after the Stones cheating scandal, which happened in live poker but will certainly remind people of all the ways, its possible to cheat online.
