How Can Americans Play on Pokerstars

So obviously (for now) Americans can't play on pokerstars while in the U.S., but Americans also still can't play while outside the country.

I have to think this doesn't make sense - why can't an American on vacation in canada or Europe? - but it is what it is and that debate is for a different thread. My question is what is the best way for an American to play on Pokerstars?

I see online that you need to be able to prove to Pokerstars that you reside in a country where online poker is legal. Does that mean you need a permanent residence? I see you can apply for permanent residency in Canada as a poker player, but do you need to show that you were already a pro poker player before immigrating to Canada or can you apply just saying you want to be a pro poker player once you get there?

Also, I see you can and/or have to send them a utility bill. Would they let me go live with friends without getting a permanent residency and then send them proof that I'm living there, but still only be in Canada technically as a tourist? What about other countries like mexico, Central America, and Europe?

Any input/info/advice is greatly appreciated.

I wouldnt sell my soul to any poker site. This seems way too important. I can understand pro's maybe doing this but not any one else. If I was banned from every other USA site maybe I'd think about how to skirt around it but that would be a huge reach for me. No offense intended here btw I just wouldnt worry about it. If they want my money they'll get legal here until they do...you know the rest.

@rancidcarp: I understand that viewpoint. But even today I was reading that Pokerstars has on average 30k players, the second place cite 3k. 10x difference. If you want to play the big games, you gotta have Pokerstars. They are clearly the industry leader.

And I'm not saying I'm gonna go move to Canada tomorrow. I just know that it can be done, and I want to do if any of the very knowledgeable members of Cardschat know how. It's cool if you don't know, but please save the commentary as to whether or not it's a good idea.

When I play on poker stars there is usually over 100,000 players on there, and I play during the quiet times.

Oh I do miss PokerStars but I just couldnt and would leave my family and friends and move. Poker isnt that important to me I guess at this point in my life. But I wish you well with whatever you decide to do about it. I do think its crazy they arent in US market but since black friday my attitude toward online poker has changed alot.

You could get a utility bill and other proof if your friends let you and then play in Canada. You just would have to physically located there while you play.

I believe you would also have to open a bank account. There is a bunch of things needed to play there.

I think the majority of us miss PS as the place to play, but unless you are grinding online poker for a living, it doesn't seem wise to "move" to Canada just to play real cash at PS.... besides, Caribbean is warmer. :)

the US govt ( the biggest ponzi scheme ever known to man) cant even balance a check book cant to anything efficiently except destroy wealth that the private sector creates. So I dont have any faith in any of the assclowns solving the problem.

Thanks Zorba. So that even helps my point that Pokerstars is where it's at. I guess none of the players who migrated out of the US to play poker are on Cardschat.

I got an offer to play via TV (team viewer) on Pstars through a Swiss player, I turned it down not because of the Vig they would charge(which was extreme) but because it's not worth risking a life ban from stars if they ever return to USA market.
As Zorba pointed out and you quickly agreed, PS is where it's at.
You can with enough skill and discipline garner a living with a $500ish starting bankroll there. Pretty awesome home for Degens and recreational players alike.
God I miss it. Lol

As referenced above as well, Canada doesnt just open their doors to immigrate there. So if that's a decision you make have a solid bankroll and living expenses segregated as well as a proven track record as being a winning player with a consummate approach ready to take to this lifestyle.

Google Hotspot Shield. Cheapest good quality VPN around. One issue will be the bank account itself. I am not American so I do not know for sure.

the lack of PS in the USA is crushing to any player with aspirations of becoming pro. If you are serious about wanting to play there, the quickest way is through a "stepladder account". It involves partnering with another person in a country where it is legal. Having them be your "face" to communicate with PS, accept cashouts, etc.

You can then use IP relocation tools to reroute the packets from that location to yourself. It requires a large amount of computer/technical skill or assistance and may also be illegal (certainly PS will ban/seize) if they find out.

Many pros did this immediatley after the PS ban, in order to compete in the SCOOP and continue to play. Not sure if this practice is still done.

Hi,
I am american citizen, but not in the US, currently living in germany and still playing on the PS.
Before it was easier to switch proxy and/or vpn to outside of US, but now you have to have local address and some bills like proof of residential address abroad, then you can play.

This is an old thread from 2 years ago that got necromancied. I'm now familiar with a number of ways that an American can legally play on Pokerstars if they were to relocate long(ish)-term, although it still is a shame you can't play while on vacation, whereas with PS New Jersey, you can play while just passing through as long as you're within the state boarders.

I am also no longer particularly interested in this topic as other than occasional one week vacations to Europe, I have realized that while it's unregulated nature makes it less than ideal and it's software is crap, America's Cardroom (ACR) does provide all the games I need to grind from home or anywhere in the US.

I want to make it clear I am 100% not interested in any illegal means to access Pokerstars from the US like a VPN or a proxy account. While ghosting is currently legal and theoretically I could partner with someone who's only roll is to clink the buttons, that's not something I'm interested in. And I highly recommend to anyone reading this that you don't try to circumvent Pokerstars' geolocation rules with a VPN -- you will get caught, you will have your money confiscated, and you will be given a lifetime ban from Pokerstars. It's a shame that such illegal activity is promoted on Cardschat.

Why would anyone want to VPN in Pokerstars anyways? Yeah they have great software but it's the toughest site to play on. I mean it's full of regs and the micros are a bunch of nits. There are plenty of chooses in US to play with great action.

I don't think it is being promoted, it's just a few comments from some members.

Keep it legal, Poker Stars will be back in the USA when they can, they can't let that much cash escape their clutches, and if you get banned from PS for illegal activity, then when they do come back you wont be allowed to play.

Emigration to another country ► legally live there 5 years ► take their nationality ► create account on PS

US players can play only in Home Games
