Here in canada ,three of the provincial governments,British Columbia,Manitoba and Quebec have banded together to start their own online poker and betting site. I am thinking of joining since the site is connected to the provincial lottery corporations of each province and also connected to the local government run casino in which i play live poker. My thinking is that this site will be more secure than a privately run site such as Bovado. Are there any places worldwide where the poker site is government run ? What do Cardschat members think about government run poker/betting sites ?

I would even say its worse if he's from America. Look at our debt deficit. So much corruption going on it's a joke. Yes, there were a few scandals in poker, but in the whole out look of everything, I bet way less scandals in the world of poker, than about every other facet of life. If your putting your money on the felt, you must feel somewhat comfortable with being able to lose it.

This question is interesting. Look, in brazil is being discussed in chamber of deputies to regulate poker as a sport of the mind. You may notice, everywhere there this practice of this game, but the authorities close the eyes to this reality. Thus, "if benefit" (with a generous tax collection) to the government this is legal.

The government only wants the money not by offering something better but by achieving monopoly.

Maybe a Vietnam War draft dodger?
...you guessed it ...but was not against the Vietnam war,my thinking was and still is why fight conventionally and lose young lives when you have a few weapons that could end a war with one detonation ? such as we did with Japan. Could have saved trillions of $ and a few hundred thousand american lives.

The Canadian poker sites you are referring too are called "PlayNow" and "Espacejeux" (in Quebec), and I have to say they are a joke. There are usually only about a few hundred players online (as low as 100 players sometimes), the promotions are non existent and I think you need to rake a certain amount before you can even withdraw your own money. In addition, I keep hearing on the radio that some politicians are talking about making it illegal to gamble on non-Canadian online gambling sites (to stop all the money that is leaving the country), so the last thing we should do is go on those two Canadian sites. I hope they go belly up real fast and I would encourage any Canadian to stay the hell away from those 2 sites (Playnow.com and Espacejeux). The more those two sites succeed, the more talk there will be about banning all other sites that are not Canadian-based.

Govt sites

I think that france and the USA are 2 screwed up countries , with way less freedoms than they both claim. Canada is much more progressive than these 2 supposed flagships of democracy. Canadians will always have the right to play poker anywhere and will never ban poker as in the USA because of the religious right. Not much difference between the USA and Saudi Arabia when it comes to online poker. Also in canada poker winnings and lottery winnings are not taxed as in the USA and France. What you win is what you keep. The USA and France are still living in their revolutionary modes.

There are no taxes on winnings on the government run poker site. There are no taxes in Canada on poker winnings, lottery winnings,or gambling winnings. I know ,that in the USA, these winnings are taxed at almost 45%.

I've played on Playnow quite a bit since they opened up in Manitoba. If you live in the province it is easy to deposit and withdraw money. I've always assumed that it was 100% safe and secure, and have never had a reason to doubt that. It's not exactly gov't run - rather the company "Playnow" has the contract with the government to run the poker site for Manitoba and BC (not sure how it is done in Quebec).

The poker software is quite minimalistic - no bells and whistles. Oddly, it's a lot slower that pokerstars considering Playnow has so few customers and PS has so many. There is very little variety, again because there are so few customers. Also, most of the chat is in French since most of the customers are in Quebec.

It does not seem right that a government encourages game of chance , when on the other hand there are partnerships to combat ludopatia

It doesn't seem right that our national debt grows faster and faster, knowing that so much corruption is going on and the rich get richer. Eventually countries are not going to respect the U.S. dollar.

At the end of FY 2015 the US national debt was “guesstimated” to be $21.7 trillion

....What , is ludopatia ?

....The only thing that might stop the growth of the American national debt , is Donald Trump.

..........Actually , i have now joined the government run poker site Playnow. I have not seen any chat in french. I have always found a game to play, whether cash ,tournament , or sit n go. The site goes 24/7 and i have found that it is a lot easier to navigate than Pokerstars ,which is continually adding new components to the point that in the last 2 years it has become cumbersome and top heavy. It actually now takes longer to get to your game on Pokerstars or to find something. I give Playnow a thumbs up.
