full tilt poker announced the Onyx Cup. A tournament series with buy-ins from $100,000 to $300,000, with an estimated $30 million prize pool across the entire series. There will be five preliminary events, culminating in a $250,000 buy-in Grand Finale that will see $1 million added to the prize pool.

The top three finishers in each event will earn points toward the Onyx Cup leaderboard. At the end of the Grand Finale, the person with the most points at the top of the leaderboard will earn the title of Onyx Cup Champion, and will be presented with the Onyx Cup, get a luxury sports car, and be acknowledged as "the player that conquered poker's elite."

Onyx Cup events will take place in the United States, Europe, and Asia and will be broadcast in 20 different languages across 40 countries. Qualifiers will begin on March 15 on Full Tilt Poker.

Pfft.. chump change. I'm waiting for the $1 million dollar buy-in tournaments that FTP will inevitably put on next year. Then, it may be worth to play.. but $100K? Nah.. not even worth getting up for in the morning.

Probably the only ones playing will be the FTP pros and they'll probably be paid most of their buy-in. FT doesn't get the volume that PS gets, so they're creating higher buy-ins? They need to rethink their strategy.

Yeah the million dollar entry fee will have to be the only logical next step. It will probably be announced right after that unknown player wins the first onyx cup, because the buy-ins weren't high enough to keep the "non-elites" out.

PS has about 2.3 times more players so they can pull it off. I'm gonna ball park and say around 30 play?

btw starts in may for Mortis if he decides its a worthy tournament to take down;)

There are many internet pro's (not sponsored) who will definitely play in this, regardless of what site it is on, aswell as them already playing on all major sites. I'm sure a few PS pro's will play it too

Well, maybe if someone wants to stake me for it. Then I'd do it.. just so I could help the person who stakes me. Obviously the tournament is going to be full of fish and would be easy peasy! But.. I probably have something else to do that day, anyway. :)

I thought this was a live tourney. From everything I have read it will be televised, and imo watching online poker...on my t.v. just sounds redundant.

WOW.. That one is a beauty! I know that Teddy Roosivelt is on the 1k bill, but that's about it. Which site did you get the picture of that bill Vanquish? I want to learn more.

I've already heard Negreanu complain that the first event is at the same time as the EPT Grand Final. He said if they move the date he will play, otherwise he's probably out. I bet a lot of the European pros and pokerstars pros will have to miss out in favor of the EPT, which leads me to believe this will end up being a very small field of mostly Full Tilt sponsored players.
