I played a double or nothing on poker stars today(they are called 50fifty on stars) and i finished 2nd and got paid $2.30 when the buy in was $1.50. Could someone please tell me why these are called DoN when they don't even double your money, the rake seems to be unreal.
Cheers

It's not a double or nothing, those were replaced by these a few years ago. Half the prizepool is split evenly and half distributed based on chipstacks when it ends.

So the risk to reward is not really worth it then?

As already 4 years on pokerstars no more DON SNG :D

Acronym for Double-Or-Nothing type of Sit-n-Go tournament. The tounament ends once half the playing field is left, awarding the surviving players double their buy-in.

Fifty50s differ from Double or Nothings in their payout structure. Only half of the prize pool is distributed evenly amongst the top half of finishers. The other half is distributed based on chip count, with each chip having an equal value.

This difference means that players always have some incentive to care about the size of their chip stack, whereas in Double or Nothings this was not always the case.

Fifty50s only play well for multi-tabling, to get the vip-status ( SN or SNE) on PokerStars. But Fifty50s are much less profitable than regular SNG...

I find fifty50 better than don. A first place finish after knocking a big stack out in sixth place is profitable enough, whereas with a standard don all youre ever going to get back is double the buy in.

Yup no more classic "Double or Nothing" on PokerStars because a lot of Chinese players played together against other players and earned a lot of money. Now you can play just these Fifty50s which is not so good for profit in my case but it's ok for earnings points to reach some VIP level.

The Double or nothing tournament on PokerStars is long gone, I wrote about this angry letters in support, but to no avail. In tournaments where you play you can win from its entrance without rake which 1,39 up to three to four times longer need to fight for chips, like 100 chips 4 cents .

Positive property of DoNs that they usually have low rake. But on Stars, for example, they are (fifty50) a little expensive and dangerous for beginners.

It is because it isnt classic Double or Nothing SNGs. in 1.50$ games, for win you will get 1.35$ + 0.04$ for every 100 chips you will finish with.

So that means if you will get ITM and finnish with 3000 chips you will get 1.35 + 30x0.04 = 2.55$

It might look like unbeatable games, but theres a lot of really bad players in 1.50$ games. I played them like 1 year ago and in around 700 games I made profit of around 130$ with 16% ROI I believe. What is actually better than I had on regular DoNs on other pokersites... But 3.50$ or 7$ games are significantly harder, thats why I stopped to play it.

Interesting that you say the 3.50$ and 7$ games are much harder. I'm comfortable at the 1.50$ level and find fifty50s more profitable than DoNs. I have been thinking moving up to the next level. In what way did you find the 3.50$ harder?

Like in every other game on higher stakes, competition is harder. Less fishes and more regular players. But maybe I overrated those 3.50 games little bit. I played only like 100 of them and I still made few bucks profit, but it was only like 5$. Better competition wasnt the only one reason why I stopped to play it. I also lost motivation etc.. Definitively go and try those 3.50 if you are profitable in 1.50. GL.
