Do casinos consider it rude to play tournaments only?

I called to ask about a tournament at a casino just down the street yesterday and was told that the buy-in is $25, and that there's $200 added to the prize money by the casino. So I'm wondering, do casinos hold poker tourneys as an inducement to get players in to play ring games, or do they stand to make money from tournaments, too? I'm sure there's a tournament fee (guessing probably $5 on top of the $25), but why are they throwing in $200?

Will I be a disliked customer if I come in only for the tournaments? My friends usually play a tournament, then after they're eliminated they play half an hour of ring games.

I would think that the main reason they hold tournaments is to get people into the casino. At the 1 I play at they hold a 20+2 daily (with rebuy) and the poker room holds up to 110 people so thats only 220 profit. As people start to fall out they open ring games and they usually get around 4 tables going. They probally but in the extra money to get bigger crowds maybe to compeat with other poker rooms in the area. I dont think its rude at all to play in the tournament and leave and really they probally dont care anyway. There just doing there jobs, its not like they get a cut of the money.

hey what casino were you at dude besides they dont even make money off of poker so its not a good place to get comps i think they are drawing ppl to their ring game to make a decent profit from poker

I would think they're making too much money to care about one guy just going for tourneys.

Okay

It is all psych. People like to go where they are known (reall or perceived). You go for the tourney. Then you return for another....another...another...try a ring game...bring your other half....tell friends (advertising)...

Now the casinos that do not offer poker and or tourneys miss out on the poker players (their friends and wives). I see it all day long...guys playing tourneys and ring games..their girlfriends, wives, and or boyfriends are playing bj/roul/slots....so while you are playing your game someone is losing $$$ at casino profit centers...poker rooms in the casinos are cheap and affordable (comps) while your wife loses her shirt at blackjack. Also poker is a no risk game..no advantage for or against the house. You cant place an advertisement in a newspaper for $200 a day (at least not in a metro area). SO adding $200 to the pot is a cheaper means of getting butts in chairs.

SO it boils down to 'advertisment' or the most new bodies in the door at the lowest expense per head.

All good points. #1 lesson - don't bring spouse to casino when playing poker. ;)
