Not only did I get a headach trying to read this post, all of what I COULD make out happened awhile ago and has since been resolved--or almost resolved. Any way, Ultimatebet has since had an ongoing investigation about this whole thing and HOPEFULLY it will be totally over with soon!:deal: Not only that, but there have been other posts about this exact same thing in the past!

maybe, just maybe, this will get our government to know that we need to have poker be allowed....so that we can get some kind of oversight of this industry....I don't care how or why they make it LEGAL, just so long as they do...:)

Unfortunately Wonka I think it will have the exact opposite effect. Thiswill make those opposed to online gambling state their case by saying "You see people are being cheated and hoodwinked out of their life savings" that old gag that they just won't let die.

For the record I hope I am wrong and you are right though.

^ this.

Unfortunately, I think any argument using this as a basis for legalising online poker is gonna ring somewhat hollow:

"People are getting hurt doing something they weren't supposed to be doing, but if we just legalised it the whole problem would go away!"

Fact is, the same argument has been used before with zero success for legalising drugs (at least, it has been here - I assume someone's tried it in the US too). The counter-argument is an easy one: "If we legalise it, people are still gonna get hurt. With drugs, they're still gonna overdose, and with poker they're still gonna lose their life savings."

I think the argument really needs to be along the revenue and regulation line - people are gonna do it anyway, but if it's legalised, at least the government can tax the income and regulate it.

You are right in terms of what arguments are likely to win the battle, however, from a logical standpoint, the main problem most people have with drugs (at least those who have some experience with them) is the crime they cause and the lifestyle ppl get dragged into due to insane price inflation and the fact that they feel forced to hide it if they do get out of control.

The same applies to the current online poker situation, b/c the people who really want to play, play anyway. However, the stigma attached to online poker will also stop a struggling addict from admitting their problem to their peers. Only once it is legalized, can proper precautions and resources be developed to protect those that cannot help themselves (addicts, minors, and Canadians :p )
