Building up BR at Stars

I can't seem to build my BR up very much at stars anymore. I'd get it up to about $100, then I will get down to $20. I usually play $3 turbo 6 player SnG's, $3 MTT, and sometimes, heads up. Anyone got any advice for building up BR on stars?

i'm down to $6 right now. Im thinking of doing a few $2.20 HU, and when i get to about $12, do some $1.20 SnG's, once im at $20, go back to doing $3 6 max SnG's.

Your main problem is moving up too fast in stakes......for the sake of argument I would like to know if this is your whole BR in general? If so when you reach 20$ 3$ turbos, are def way out of proper management. You should still be playing the lowest possible sngs, which are either the .10 cents ones or the 1.20$ which I do recommend.

1c/2c or 2c/5c tables. On U.B, I turned $10 into $240 in a month doing those.

Early on I had a problem where I'd make $20, then lose $20, then make $20, then lose $20. I figured out that when I was up $20 I got comfortable and wasn't playing to the best of my ability.

But when I got close to losing money, I'd panic and put my nose to the grind stone and start winning.

What fixed it for me was getting PokerTracker, because I'm *hate* having red marks on my permanent record.

But I had the same block at $500, and $1,000 profit as well. To get past that I took a break, cashed some out, and then set a goal of several hundred beyond that level.

That's just what worked for me though. I played rings, and I know tournaments are a lot more swingy, so you'll have more ups and downs.

Yeah, my problem is i get comfortable at my BR, and start going higher and higher in stakes and I lose, then I panic and do really bad.

Thats what happened right now. Down to $1 with $3 in a 6 player SnG. First is $11. Im currently in 1st, playing smart, letting the other 3 players fight it out.

If i win this, im going to do .10 MTT's. If I lose this SnG, Im going to deposit about $25-$50. Then im going to follow kings thread about BR management.

if i was you i'll play like 10 -15 games of 1.10 or the 1.20 games (27/45 players)

granted you cash in some game do the same with the 2.20 satty to the 100k game but take the T$ these game are easy to cash T$ an after getting comfortable with those, an ur BR is rolling then start playin 5.5 games so you can get a feel for it, you wont see the donkey calls like you do in the 3/6 games

1/2/5 good way to start a BR but stay dicipline an follow thru with the batch of games you choose to play. gl an keep us posted

oh well.

2 nights ago i was down to .40 cents. I played in a 10 cent tourny, came in first. Went into a $5 4 player heads up, came in first, and won a few SnG's and got back up to my $70 and I went to bed happy lol.

Can't pull that off tonight tho lol.

I am in a 1.20 27player SnG.

I think I need a new style of playing. I usually just wait and see how many people are in the hand. And if there are like 2 in there PF, and i have like 5 4 hearts, I will call, and not hit anything.. Maybe I should play tighter? Idk.

Firstly, play better - I wonder from your post on Tournament Analysis thread whether you are too concerned about limping into the money rather than gunning for first? If this is the case you should definately NOT be playing 6 players SnG's.

Secondly, I know you want to stick to bankroll Management, bit try and avoid the $1.20 games. 20% rake is going to be hard to overcome full time. Move up to $2/$3/$4 games - rake will be 10% I think.

MTT's are going to have more variance. Don't bother playing games that are too low buy in as the pay offs aren't worth the time taken (and you may not be 100% committed if you don't care about losing stake).

Have you considered playing the Sunday 100K satellites (the $2 and 90 FPP ones)? These are good bankroll builders IMO, as opponents tend to go all in early - just fold first round or 2, then you can play yourself right into them.

i played last weeks sunday 100k. Won a seat in it for 70PP, but I came in like 5000th out of 25,000 people lol.

god damnit, i lost all my money last night. I couldn't get a hand to save my life. Couldn't get a face card or anything. that sucked lol.

Oh well, looks like im gonna have to pull out my credit card and deposit $25-$50

sorry, I meant win your seat, withdraw the $11 tournament dollars, and repeat. you dont actually ever have to play the event (very high variance if you do).

Thats right, you'll have $11 tourn money to play 10 1.10 sng. I agree with Mr. Sticker, ring games are the way to go. Most of the rake I pay is when I'm in as 70-100% favorite. 20% sngo rake will make it hard to get anywhere.

I do much better in cash games too. I started out at Stars playing SnG's and did well at first, placing ITM in at least every other tourney for awhile there, and winning several. Then I got a taste of ring games. I could play a $6.50 SnG for an hour and maybe make $30, or I can play a cash game for as little as 15 minutes and often make the same $30, even more. Last night I made $150 in probably 30 minutes playing $50NL, I was running hot. In a tourney (particularly a cheap one), no matter how hot you run you're going to get paid off no better than 1st place, often after hours of play in a MTT. In cash games you can stop the bleeding if you're running cold and step away from the table (no buy-in to worry about forfeiting), while if the cards are running hot you can maximze profits in a short amount of time. Maybe at the higher limits, with better players all around, it will be harder to get ahead as much, but at the $25 and $50NL games, the majority of players seem to be ATM's.

Not saying tourneys can't be lucrative, and with a tiny BR they're probably the best option for most people. It's just a different way to play the game, and I seem to be better at ring play. I think I've just about ruined myself on tourney's. Every time I try one now I start getting impatient after the first break, and tend to get reckless. Or I'm shortstacked from playing TAG too long, stack with a premium hand to try and catch up, and then get drawn out on. It's frustrating when those bad beats come after a couple hours of clawing your way to the top 25% of a MTT.

Once in awhile I'll change things up and play a cheap tourney, more for cheap practice at low risk than anything else, but I tend not to do well at all in them now compared to when I first started. The strategy is completely different compared to cash games and I have a hard time switching gears.

So once you build a bit of a BR you might try some low stakes cash games, but be prepared to adjust play style if all you've played are tourneys. On Stars I find the lowest penny stakes to be as much a donkfest as a freeroll or cheap SnG, but once you hit $25NL and up it's a lot easier to play even ABC poker and turn a profit. Not a huge profit, but a profit nonetheless.

Meh, I'm not a Ring-Game type of person. Maybe if i can get my bankroll up then i will go into the $10 Nl games or something. Until then, im sticking with my SnG's.

I deposited another $20 today. My dad entered a $6 6 max thinkin he will win. WRONG, he came in 6th lol. After that, I entered a $3.40 MTT. 27 people. I came in 4th and won about $8. Im down to $18 right now.
Im going to quit those 6 max turbo STT's. They just force the game to end early and if you can't catch anything, you just get blinded out fast. So im really liking the MTT's. I seem to do pretty well in them.

When I get my bankroll up to about $50, im probably going to enter one of those $5 MTTs that Effexor was in where 1st was about $1,500

well I think the best move so far is dropping any turbo game....tbh

Game choice is important.

At stars, I suggest you investigate the $2+.20 sats to the $100K game. There are $1+.10 games, but I think the 36 seat sng's for $2+.20 are a better deal.

Top 6 spots get entry into the $100K. You unregister and get $11T, and 7th gets $6. The T bucks spend just like real cash getting into tourneys. These games are fairly easy to cash in, and you don't have to worry about skinny final table payouts.

Investigate them.

I've built up my BR from $5 to $250 just playing micros. Mostly SNG's.
Have never deposited, just took the $5 that PS gave me and built it up.

So you guys are saying if I win a seat into the 100k, i could unregister and get $11?

I found my new playing style, and my new game i like. I started playing the $3 1 table, and i place 1st or 2nd every time.

For the 3rd time, YES!!!!!

You can't withdraw the money as cash, but you can use it to enter SnG's as you can take prize money from there as cash.
