bet the farm and lost

i was playing in a live game last night and was dealt 6 7 hearts. flop came 8h 5s 10h guy (thats looser than a $2 hooker) bets $10, 1 player folds and i call, turn is 3c, he bets another 10 and i call again, river is 9h....this is where it gets interesting....he looks at me and says he wants to raise it to $150....i think about it and figure he's on a flush and i have to have the nuts so i tell him lets just make it an even $200 and he calls it.....and he flips over J Q hearts .:banghead: .....any suggestions on how to break it to the wife that i lost half the rent money??

1. I figure you meant that he was on a flush draw, not already on the flush.
2. 67h...fold preflop.
3. If you somehow wound up in this hand, facing that $10 bet, fold on the flop.

Question: WTF were you doing playing with the rent money to begin with?

Bankroll Rule # 1: Don't play with money you can't afford to lose (hint hint, this would include the rent money).

As far as telling the wife, you may want to do that over the phone.

Brutus, assuming this isn't a joke thread of some sort (and I've missed it), you've been around awhile and should know better. How the heck did you get tangled up in this hand? Even when the fish is a LAP, you know have to occasionally give him credit for something. Even fish make big hands.

I don't know the details considering the blinds and preflop action, but he most probably had odds to chase that hand (straight and flush)....so I disagree with you on that, JD.

But I gotta quote this for emphasis (you were playing with your rent money!!!??!??!):

i wish it was a joke but no its not. thinking of telling her by postcard from somewhere far far away. it didnt start out as playing with rent money it was my poker money but thinking i had the nuts my dumbass broke into the rent money. blinds were 3/5 when the 8 10 hearts hit on the flop i figured i had enough outs to call him. and when i said i figured he had a flush i meant that the river gave him the flush.

according to pokertracker when I used to play ring games a lot, 76s was my most profitable hand

Are you sure it wasn't a cold deck? Sounds a bit fishy to me. Why does he put in such a big bet on the river? He has the nuts, and should be trying to milk you. If he bet the pot, you raised, he re-raised etc, I'd understand. But how could he know you had a strong hand? Sounds like you've been done. Only advice, don't play with these people again.

You could tell the Missus you were robbed, because it's proably true.

trust me the same thought crossed my mind. i checked the cards for marks and everything. i still dont believe it. i mean what the hell are the chances of this happening. his explaination of preflop and turn bet was he thought i might be chasing a flush or straight and if it was a flush he wanted more into the pot since his was higher and if it was a straight to try to get me out of the hand to keep me from chasing and maybe catching it. and the bet after the river he thought i had the flush too or a straight and not thinking he also had hearts id call him. ive been fighting the rigged theory but its not easy to believe i wasnt set up.

If I were him, I would have made a giant bet on the river as well. You are calling, and never raising, meaning you either have little to nothing and will probably fold anyway, or you just made a big hand (like a straight or flush) and might be willing to risk a huge amount of money.


It *might* have been a setup, but I wouldn't base that upon his play.

I say it is possble you've been had if you didn't know these people. Although I have seen this happen online. A high flush lost to a straight flush (ass end) lost to a straight flush (top end).

roughly half the table was close friends the other half (including this guy) is first time ive played with them. .....glad to hear that youve seen this happen before because i shore havent and hearing that someone has seen this kind of thing happen eases the set up theory in my mind a little. and really the only thing that kept me from taking the being set up too far was one of my close friends was the dealer......and yeah JD i was one of em that already read it and went to respond and when i posted my response yours was gone and it looked like i was talking to myself lol.

I got a suggestion, don't play poker with your rent money! You got a gambling problem, my friend. There are institutions, people that can help.

I was going to ask - who dealt? If it was your friend and he shuffled then you're probably OK.

The hand still sounds unusual though. He has a big drawing hand, but should be trying for free cards - he only had Queen-high with a gutshot straight and non-nut flush draw until the river. Worth a semi-bluff on the flop, but not on the turn. And his river bet still doesn't make sense. If he thinks you were on a flush draw, he should either check-raise or bet and let you raise him. Just coming in with a big bet will scare you off if you have a pair for example, where he might get called with a smaller bet. It's a fact that most big hands don't win big pots, and and just because he has a straight flush doesn't mean he should bet big.

I have been burned like this before.. the 2nd nuts can be a harsh mistress. I remember a game where I flopped the low-end of the straight on a rainbow board. Was up against a really loose player (drunk) who was betting like a maniac.. only to find he had hit the high-end. However, when I go to a game.. I bring exactly as much cash as I plan to lose. If I can afford to lose $100, I bring exactly that much. That way I am not tempted to put in more money than I can afford to lose.

Though, admittedly.. there have been times where I have had the stone-cold nuts on the river and wished I'd brought a little more cash. But, the ONLY time I would EVER put in more money than I can afford to lose is with the stone-cold nuts on the river.. or before if there's no way for any draw to beat me.

Why do I always agree with this guy? Great minds think alike I guess. I cant imagine gambling with my rent money.
