Beriac's 6 Q's: Full Tilt "Token" Satellites

These things are awesome.

What: full tilt poker's single- or multi-table SNGs where the prize can be either a $26 tournament token or a $75 tournament token.

Where: Full Tilt, silly. Many of the site's bigger tournaments cost $26 or $75 inclusive of rake fees and so these tokens are useful for a wide array of single- and multi-table tournaments.

When: Constantly. For the $75 token, there are $24+2 and $11+1 options. For the $26 token, there are $8+0.70, $6+0.60, and $4+0.40 options. 2-table and 1-table, turbo and non-turbo variations.

Why: I haven't done any scientific studies, but it seems to me that play in most satellites tends to be looser than average, and these are no exception. What's really cool is that they offer a certain number of top prizes to the top X participants (5 if it's a 2-table SNG, 2 if it's a 1-table), so the dynamics are a little different - you're shooting to get past the bubble, not win 1st. Most players don't adjust.

Who: I dunno... you? Me too.

How: My strategy is to wait for a premium hand and then try to double up. One double up can take you all the way to the end because of the structure. Then just play strategically subject to your opponents.

Bonus: Perhaps the coolest thing about this is that you can enter to win a $26 token, then use it to win a $75 token if you like.

I've played about 8 2-table turbo SNGs for $26 tokens, and I've won tokens in 4 of them. One, I used to enter the MTT that I won on Wednesday, and 2 of them I used to enter SNGs for $75 tokens, both of which I was lucky enough to win tokens from. Finally, I used a $75 token to enter a satellite to tomorrow's big $350k guaranteed tourney, and won an entry. All for the price of $32 worth of buy-ins!

I don't know if it's because you're playing for tokens rather than cash, but players are even sillier here than typical SNGs, and I believe above-normal ROIs are possible. I thought I should pass this on to my CC brethren. Good luck!

There are both turbos and non-turbos available. I do an assortment of both. Obviously turbos allow for less play and less patience, but I find that the villains are equivalently crazier with their own play so I'm not sure which is best. But both are available.

Thanks for asking -- but pretty poorly. I went out about halfway, after a few pros which was nice but certainly not where I had hoped.

Things started out well. I didn't get too much in the way of cards, but people were playing extremely tight so picking up some blinds was fairly easy. I worked my way up from 3k starting chips to maybe 4.5k, which would unfortunately prove to be my peak.

After the first 20% or so of people were eliminated, people started to open up some. In two specific instances over the course of the next half hour, I raised pre-flop and saw the flop with a premium hand, where the flop missed me but was also a scary flop that my opponent likely did not hit. The first time, I had AK and the flop came 922. The second time, the flop came J67 to my AQ. The first time I tried a pot-sized bet to take it down right there, but got re-raised all-in and was forced to fold. The second time, I bluffed a check-raise and was again re-raised all-in and forced to fold. These hands combined cost almost 35-40% of my stack.

A little later, I was dealt AA in the big blind and everyone folded to me... grrrr!

A shrewd player robbed me of a good chunk of the remaining portion of my chips by smooth calling my TPTK value bets only to reveal flopped trips (via a pocket pair) when we showed down.

After that, it was all about picking my spot. I did, with AJs in the cutoff, went all-in for maybe 6-7x the BB, got called by AK and was gone.

I think I played "ok". I used the same strategy that I had in my more successful tournament earlier this week, and I think I need to adjust that pretty strongly because the calibre of play was much higher and much more aggressive -- ie, I believe at least one of those re-raises was a bluff or semi-bluff but had no ability to call it. I think I need to switch gears a be more patient and value-oriented the next time I try one of these, at least until closer to the money when I might open my game up a bit.

But thanks to their cool satellites, hopefully I will be able to try another one soon. :) I did have fun, and that's what counts in my books!

You use them to buy into bigger tourneys; the normal buyin for a MTT there is $26, so you can use one of those tokens to enter.

No

No

Yep

I myself always play the $8.70 2-tables to satellite into the bigger tourneys.

Thats what i played. 18 people, 6 gets $14, 1-5 gets the token. Very easy.

indeed. I think I'm like 6 for 10 roughly. Well worth the time + effort. Haven't done well in any MTTs with those tickets yet though :/
