acceptable table talk?

is there a FAQ on what is unacceptable at live or online games?

If you have to ask if something is acceptable, it probably isn't.

Yeah, here's one.

Table Talk FAQ:

1. Use common sense.

2. When in doubt, refer to #1.

I mentioned in another thread the guys talking in Russian through chat on bodog, which I thought was out of line, but in that same tourney there was also a guy who kept announcing what he had folded after the flop came out. Several of the players told the guy to knock it off, and his response was something like "It's only a $4 buy-in so lighten up, lol!" Totally uncalled for, regardless of the entry fee for the tourney.

yea just tell customer support on em bro. they will disable their chat for a period of time or sometimes they will even disable it period

I usually say nothing when playing online; it's an unnecessary distraction. It's also difficult to chat and multitable...

No matter how annoying people can be I never disable my chat.

When you disable your chat you are allowing the other players in the game to play with more information than you have.

Don't discuss a hand that's going on. Don't personally attack other players. If you aren't sure, don't do it.

What cracks me up are the guys that call out other players for donk plays and try to tell them how stupid their plays are! Dude, if your opponents are doing dumb things-let them! Even if they get lucky once or twice, in the long run you will end up with their $$$!

Racial slurs should get someone a suspension, IMO. There's no room for garbage like that. One idiot I saw in a tourney about a week ago dropped the n-word on a guy that knocked him out (assuming he was black b/c of his avatar and player name, I guess) and the fool had his real name for his player name and his picture for his avatar! What a moron.

It continually amazes me what worthless trash the anonimity of online chat brings out...

Live play talk is usually much more "civil" and on point but I have experienced inappropriate/aggressive comments on rare occasions.

I was playing a freeroll on UB late last night, and deep into the second hour these three guys from Australia started warning each other off when they had monster hole cards and telling each other what they had if they were going to showdown. Freeroll or not, it was messed up and I can't imagine what made those guys think that was a cool thing to do?

What would be the appropriate way to bring that to someone's attention at the site? Those guys laughed it off when some of us told them their table talk wasn't cool, and it ticked me off enough to complain but I couldn't find an e-mail address that looked like one to use. Dumbasses.

For 'most' every site, the appropriate e-mail is support@(thesite).com

Here's a copy I received from Full Tilt with an alternative:
Please send future chat violations to chatabuse@fulltiltpoker.net, and remember to include the person's Player ID and a copy of the conversation. We'll always do our best to address your concerns.

It always help to include the Game or Table ID and the time it occured, but that is also found in a copy of the chat if you copy enough of it.

On Stars, most tables have a 'call moderator' button in the dealer chip tray pop-up. Click it and a mod will arrive at the table shortly and review the chat. They do let you know they are there, but not which player called them.

That's a good tip, Nick. I never noticed it before. I have just e-mailed support with the player name and hand number, and it's gotten results. They have to get way outta line for me to do that though. To keep myself outta trouble, because I do get mad sometimes on a bad beat, is to just rake my finger across the numbers @#$%^&*()_ , it get's my point across.
When a player gets out of line telling a losing player what a donk he is, I wait for the loser to get out and tell the poker pro that he's not that good. A good fisherman doesn't scare away the fish!

The use of common scense is a good piece of advise. If it gets too bad I will repot them and either leave or turn off the chat. There is always another game and I can get into.

People really shouldn't talk about the cards, and insulting other players is also a no no. Other than that I would think they could be pretty much as loud as they want and no site will do something. Its definitely rude, but I'm not sure its banned.
I figure its kinda like xbox live. For some reason at lower levels (like in freerolls) people seem to think that you have to trash talk incessantly and be rude, theres at least one in every couple of tables. Once you start to get up to higher levels of play people seem to become more polite, and talk about whatever.

It's the same as with any other anonymous venue vs. real-life: jerks are emboldened to say/do things online that they would NEVER dare to try in real life because they know there will be no consequences. How many of these guys would call someone the names they do or drop racial slurs on them if they were standing right in front of them? Or tell their buddies what cards they had just folded or that they had a monster in the hole where others at the live table might not hear? Probably none.

The later rounds in the tourneys are more civilized b/c the better players don't have to TALK a good game when they can walk the walk.

Right and correct

Well, don't talk about what cards you folded or about anything that might affect the odds for the players who are still in the hand. However, I think we should all be mature enough to just ignore a player who is chatting very offensively and not to nark on them at customer support. Heck, the pros curse at each other all the time. Apparently, it's illegal at some tables to tell the player your actual cards too. Other than affecting the game odds, I think it's all about etiquette. I think online, bad etiquette isn't that big of a deal, but live, it can cause someone to tilt. I think if you try to tilt a person by being rude, then it just shows you need that edge because your poker skills aren't as strong as they need to be. However, anyone choosing to be an ass at the tables better have the bankroll to either pay people off, which is what they deserve, or have the poker skills to back up their mouths!

in live poker, it's perfectly acceptable to respond to any comment, directed either at you or anyone else at the table with:
a) i put you on ace-king
b) you got them pocket sevens?
c) you keep pullin' that move, and you're gonna be outta here in no time
d) my cousin tony is going to break your bitch-ass legs if you don't pay him back what you owe him *point to random guy in the poker room*

There are so much injuries also in online poker tourneys.
I even don't know why the poker room engines doesn't capture some sentences/expressions and censured them. I know some are censured automatically on BWIN : chat rooms ==> For instance, you can write Yess, but not Yesssssssss
Probably there are a lot of progress to do in that way as it is a long work to do that manually and make so much people to become nervous in some cases => That is like pollution for good games
