J dude and I took on one small section of the whole argument that online poker isn't random last night, we looked specifically at people getting rivered. He and I delt 10 hands with a real 52 card deck of cards, took away the hands that would not likely be in to see the flop in an online game and then delt the flop and turn. After the Turn we would look at who was ahead and then deal the river. The hand that was ahead on the turn got rivered 28% of the time. (7 out of 25 hands). We did the same on Absolute Poker, we watched 25 hands that ended in a showdown (basically if someone bet and everyone folded that didn't count) and the hand that was ahead after the turn got beat 20% of the time (5 out of 25 hands) Now I know that this isn't exactly professional, and doesn't even begin to cover the argument of predetermined hands but as far as people getting rivered more in online poker, as far as we found, you're more likely to get rivered playing a completely random home game than online poker. We concluded that the reason people think there are more river beats in online poker is because of the increased number of hands seen. While playing online you can see 60+ hands in an hour where in a home game you might only see 20 or 30. And obviously the more hands you see the more likely you are to see someone get rivered. Just something I thought would be good to share. Please post any comments that you have.
