Hi There,

I will give some context. So I am a complete novice at online poker but a few weeks back I decided to give it a go and set up a 888poker account and use their £30/$30 offer that was available to use for the first 24 hours after setting up the account. In that day I entered into about 8-10 tournaments with a $1 buy-in, with the tournaments having between 20-40 players in them. In that day I managed to win one of the 20 man tournaments and I also finished second and third in two other tournaments. For the next 4 days I would just play a few matches here and there but with play money as I did not want to gamble as I did not feel confident betting with my own money yet, until I get an email from 888poker saying that my account has been suspended for suspicion of "sharing of information between players, as a method of gaining an unfair advantage over our other members".

My account has since been reviewed and they are willing to reinstate it if I provide verified documents such as a copy of my passport or drivers licence.

I am baffled by all of this as I genuinely do not know anyone on the sitenor did I message any other players in any shape or form. I just want to know has this ever happened to anyone else or know anything about this and why I may have somehow aroused suspicion?

Also could this be some sort of scam to get copies of my documents such as passport and drivers licence?

Thanks.

From your post i couldn't find a reason why would they suspend your account, have you did something in chat maybe, that have been reported by some players??
Posting an ID is pretty common thing in poker world, i have posted it on many sites, once i also posted my electric bill to prove my address :)

anyway, here on the forum there is a 888 support thread where you can get answers from their representative. you can ask there or if you want i can move your question there...

Honestly I do not recall ever typing anything in any of the table chat boxes. It's weird because I don't know how they would even have any sort of evidence to make such a claim as I done nothing. Could another player have falsely accuse me of sharing information because I knocked them out of a match or would that sort of thing never happen in the poker community? Or even could I have been playing against another player that I didn't know that lived close to my home and the operations team at 888 just assumed that we were messaging each other in some capacity such as by call or text?

888 is a pretty solid site so we either have a case of misunderstanding or mis-identification, or perhaps you typed something someone thought was suspicious. I guess you also may have information in your account that closely matches a different user. Hard to say. I am sure it is nothing.

As far as giving legal id, you will about have to do this with most sites these days. They are heavily regulated to make sure people are not laundering money or stealing identity for whatever reason (maybe someone was banned for cheating and wants to use a different name). You can argue that you dont need to do this unless you make a deposit, but then if you turn that free money into something you may want to withdraw you wont be able to unless you give them legal id.

Alright thanks the information guys! I suppose it is not a scam and is just some sort of misunderstanding after all. I will try and contact an 888 representative on the forum to see if they can help me avoid this situation happening again. Heck I probably did do something that was suspicious or against the terms and conditions but I honestly don't know what it was I did and definitely did not intend to break any rules. Hopefully this wont happen again, especially after I somehow win big haha.
