what is a good win/loss percentage?

I play a lot of SnGs; and Mtts,
I am trying to re-evaluate my specific goals and was wonderin if there is a link to another thread or good articles-books or any advice that covers this issue of win v. loss percentages, and what is considered reasonable.

actually was looking for someone who may have access to either an average cash percentage rate for SnGs or for Mtt play;
A little more detail; specifying my own personal goals i want to set benchmarks, small [short term] weekly goals, if nobody has or knows of anything, maybe this will be a personal project, and i can & will update, my experiences as such, as an average-skilled player. . .always eager to improve. . .

simple percentages such as; an average player should expect to cash in 6/10; 5/10; 4/10; 3/10; maybe this is just 2 variable

The stat you want is ROI. Return on investment. How many times you cash is not the best way to judge your SnG game.
ex. if you cash is say 3rd place 10 out of 20 games and win $1 per cash that's $10. But if you cash in first only five times and get $5 per cash that's $15.
You cashed half the time but made more money.

The ROI will be different dependinng on the level you play. You can check out sharkscope to get a idea of what the rate the winners have at your level.

Just a note. You will want to look at how you are cashing though. If say as in the example above happens - winning 10 3rd's and no 1st then you may want to figure out why you are not making 2nd or 1st, ie..bad end game?

shorterm goals for winrate in MTTs is just not realistic. You might bink the very first one.... you might not get much more than a min. cash for the first 50. Hoping to set 'benchmarks' or small short term goals for MTT play isn't going to be possible. Only realistic goals for MTT play is to work on getting better all the time & making the best possible decisions at the moment. SNG's now is another story - - expect to be ITM ~40% to be a winning player (nothing much <38% in the longrun will be a 'winning' player).

ROI is the more finite of the two stats. After all, you are looking for a profitable playing outcome/ measurement in the longrun. It is better than saying i cash once in every 3 SnG's I enter

It looks to me that what you want is to know some % to see how far/close you are in the different games you are playing wich is ok. But you donīt mention exactly which sngīs are playing, is really different the itm% for each type.

PokerTracker and HEM will record every result from your SNG's so yoi can see where you come in each

ROI doesn't tell the whole story sometimes. If you search someone including yourself, be sure to filter down to the specific game type. Otherwise data can get easily skewed.

Also, ROI really doesn't matter a lot, what's more important is $/hour. Like, i'd rather have a 1-2%ROI making $50/hour instead of a 20% ROI making $10/hour.

what PO said about MTTs is really important. MTTs are an amazingly frustrating form of poker to play because the variance is ridiculous and it's hard to tell exactly how good you are even after thousands of them.

I think we can pretty accurately state that there are people such as Darvin Moon, Jamie Gold, Jerry Yang, et al. who are running millions $$ +EV lifetime. That means if we take the poker economy as a whole then surely there are very good players who are way under EV. It doesn't even out.

O yes! Low limit mtts and SnGs; totally other animal, & very soft;

as for variance, it just happens- this is important to recognize, death, taxes, and MTT variance. . . .

ok this is what i was looking for from my own personal record keeping/ data from PT3= I know its kinda not the most important thing to consider,m but its just a curios thing to want to know. . .
426 (10max) SnGs= 5.24 avg. Finish; 1st=106; 2nd=55; 3rd=93;
=254 x-ITM
=59.6% ITM

ITM% isn't going to help you much. ROI is much much much better stat.
i have a friend that is 25% ITM in MTT's. i know WOW, right? how can he have such a high ITM% in multi-table tournaments, crazy!
well guess what... his ROI is -5%. you heard me, MINUS 5%.

who cares how often you make the money. if your not showing profit then it doesn't matter.
generally speaking this is a good ROI at micro-low stakes:
STT 8-12% ROI
45man 20-30% ROI
180man 30-50% ROI
1000+ 50-100% ROI

generally turbo's will have a lower ROI than non-turbo's. also expect your ROI to decrease as you move up. a good return on investment in STT's at the $60+ level is going to be around 2% ROI.

What I was wanting to know was just the win vs. loss- I completely understand wanting to know, of significant importance weekly or monthly roi% or even $/hour. I just wanted to know this; what is interesting is that PT# didn't record how many sng's i actual eneter just a total number of hands. The other thing is that I have a message telling me that i need to manually configure the BI data, maybe there is a glitch w/ the site I am playing at, as when i set up my pt3, i had to manually import, but it saved the loction and now is automatic. . .okay rambling. . .

If what you want to know is how much times should expect to cash in 10max SNG´s, then the answer is avg 40% of the time (which already was answer by PO), 4/10.

About the PT3 problems, no idea, i have Hem because the time i try PT3 don´t like it.
