Merge runs these Poker Maximus series at least three times a year. Now Bovada is running a Black Diamond series. Will someone who plays in these please tell me why you do? The hype is hundreds of thousands in guaranteed games. The reality is there is never any overlay. Every games far exceeds its guarantee. Yet players keep registering long after it is met. They get several hundred players. Why are these so much more popular than the weekly big entry games on the sites?

I don't play online anymore except for CC games - but if I still did I would play in a lot of these.

There are simply not enough tournaments for US players to play anymore. So these are awesome events for people who prefer reasonably sized fields and a lot of tournaments to play.

Having an overlay in any event should always be viewed as an unexpected bonus. The guarantee just gives you a good idea of how many are expected to play in the tournament.

Fish in general, are attracted to the "big score"

These MTT series bring influxes of fishy money into the poker economy. Remember after they win this money, they recirculate a good bit in cash games. Spew it in casinos or sportsbooks etc.

I would say the big money factor is why. And I agree the overlay is just an extra. I haven't played in any of the series for a while but I thought a lot of them had overlays. Basically you get to win bigger money and I thought some had some bonuses where the best players in the series win some money - so that could be another reason why.

I wouldn't say people that play these dont play in the weekly specials. Some of the series have $11 buyins where you can win $5k, so more money to be won with your $11.
