Just read through an old post of ovitoo's about not raising 3x pre. I've always read on here in the months ive been here to raise 3-4x pre +1 for each limper.

In the case of the original thread we are in EP late in a MTT and have 20bb. We wouldnt raise 3x? We would want to raise 2.1-2.5?

Guess I gotta start updating my play style. I kinda jumped right back in where I left off 6-7 years ago. Yikes!

That 3x+1 is a more of a cash style. In tournaments these days your opening size decreases proportional to the blinds. So while deep stacked in the earliest stages at say BB <= 100 you might open for 3x, then 2.5x up until 75/150, then 2.25x up to maybe 150/300, then 2x, etc. Obviously it can be situational too, like everything poker.

Raising 3x at 20bb is generally a bad idea. You're close to pot committed by opening with 15% of your stack and you'll miss most flops and be forced to fold away your critical chips.

Oh I totally agreed with everything I read in the previous post. Just always thought 3x+1 was a given. But yeah I suppose it should be strictly cash since blinds never increase.

And ya know, I always kinda felt like I was raising too much previously. Say its late MTT and im sitting with 30bbs and I raise into someone with only 15bbs he is gonna find it alot harder to call off 3bbs as opposed to 2. Hell it gets even worse when blinds get to around 300-600 and you got stacks of 5-6k and you're opening with 1800.

please please don't be 3 x opening late in tourneys.i actually even have began to open to 50 with blinds at 10/20.at 20/40 i open usually to 100 etc etc.it will vary a bit late in tourneys say blinds are 1000/2000 with an ante i will usally open to 4122 or somthing along those.but it does depend on the other players at the table position of my open.i have learnt that its a good idea when opening later in tourneys blind on blind to put in a slightly larger raise as people will quite often just blind defend to a min open.So say blinds are 3000/6000 rather then just going 12000 i will open to say 14222.

d'mo is spot on.

Think about it: the only reason we raise to a certain amount preflop is for a favorable SPR for the hand we expect to have happen, really...

i would like to mix with 3X, 2.5, 2X with limp together, randomly! with some adjustment against players on the table! I don't like to fix amount! but it depends.

I tend to raise 3xbb and then make a decision from there. If my hand turns to muck i can always let it go.You should always have a plan for the hand before entering the pot.
