poker 'M'

hi all
poker 'M' is your stack to pot (sb+bb+antes) ratio,
while BB to stack ratio tells you to push with 10bb or less.
could anyone give any examples of any differences
between the two strategies ?

They are just two differant ways of doing the same thing.

They are not "strategies" as such. Just a measure of you're chip stack, so you know what the correct move is.

at the table
where as your bb ratio doesn't
does this not make a difference ?

I'd delete that link you have to the pushbot charts. And if you have printed it off, i'd burn it and delete it from memory.

OP- They both change with the amount of players at the table, it's just a differant calculation. They both achieve exactly the same thing. Some find it easier to use M, others BB. Personal preference. No point in explaining, the informations is out there for you to learn as jbbb has shown. (google.com is you're friend)

Your "M" also tells u how many orbits/rounds you have left before you blind out. It just 1 thing that determines how you should be playing. Table dynamics, other player stacks, pay-out structure, your position, your hand, villains range, and many other things all put together gives you a clearer picture of how you should be playing.

Whats wrong with the 'pushbot guide' as a general guide?

Because there are about a million more important factors than the strength of your holdings. As a general guide however I suppose it's 'ok'. As long as we don't go to the extreme of printing it out and following it religiously. And to be honest, i didn't really look at it before, but it's just information overload to me, it's such a complex chart it's impossible to read or absorb anything from it really.

I'd much rather make my own chart. I have used them in the past, but they kind of have to be tailored to your specific game types you are playing, to account for differant calling ranges of the average villian.

Easier to use M if you play in any games with antes(for me). If not be sure to use adjusted big blinds. Other than that read up, plenty of info on subject just at this forum alone.

Personally, I think antes don't make that much difference (because everybody pays, I don't believe it should make a difference in urgency). So I prefer to measure my stack in BBs rather than M.

They make a huge difference by inflating the pot. Also even though it's only a small percentage of the blinds, they add up quickly. If you wait until your down till 5BB to shove ATC(which is normal without antes) and your M is less than 2.5(which is normal WITH antes!) you are making huge mistakes.

That example isn't the best but is a good reason to use adjusted BB instead of BB alone once antes come into play.

One of -if not- THE biggest mistakes players make in tournamants is not changing their ranges to reflect the antes...

The pushbot chart is amazing IMO. Use it like a learning tool similar to Pokerstove - don't run ranges or equity numbers while you are playing, but mark hands/common spots and run it through it.

You'll be amazed at how widely you can profitably push, especially blind v blind.

You were the one who told me to learn push/fold ranges. It certainly has helped live (don't play many MTT's online though).
