so i played a 7500 PTS qualifier on Bovada today for the first time, i mean the one that requires a 200 PP ticket. you need to make the top 15 and there were a total of 45 players, so in essence i have to beat 1 out of 3 people and the payoff is a ticket worth 5 times the buyin, so its a good deal. i won the ticket and if any of you here played in it today or will be playin the PTS tomorrow maybe you can give a shout out here, i will be playin that and the CC freeroll tomorrow.

what i wanted to talk about in this thread is this strange situation i observed in this qualifier today due to very long late registration allowed, combine that with a high number of placings relative to number of entrants and it creates a unique and perhaps opportunistic circumstance towards the end of the tourney.

late registration is allowed up to 65 minutes after the start. after one hour there is a break and during the 5 minute break registration is still allowed until tourney resumes at which point it is finally cutoff.

today at one point as it was getting close to the break, there had been about 37 entrants and the field was down already to 16 players, so im feeling good because im thinking, only one player left before i win the ticket. then a late entrant, then another. so then its like 18 players and im like ok just need to last a while longer. someone is eliminated, but then 2 more late entrants, and im like sheesh, my chip stack has dwindled and chances arent a certainty anymore.

i make it to the break, there are 17 players left, and a total of 43 players have entered. my chances mathematically are looking very good, but then i watch as the 5 minute break ticks down, and one more player enters, then another, now there are 19 players left, 45 total have entered, and i am going to have to sweat out now 4 more eliminations to make it. my chip stack is down to 2500 now, blinds are big at 250 and these new entrants arent exactly short stacked getting a fresh 1500 chips so outlasting them wont necessarily be a piece of cake. i only have 1000 more chips than them, and they just waltzed in without having to sweat anything out.

well i ended up making it, the 2 lowest chip stacks after the break were very low, that helped, and 2 players with nice stacks foolishly battled each other to a shove in by the river on a low pair vs middle pair, so that helped too.

i paid attention to the 2 player #'s who entered during the break, they both placed, and im pretty sure the late entrant before that placed as well. these 2 late entrants come in and have 1500 chips which ranked them 15 and 16th, with 17,18,19 having lower stacks, and it put them close in chips size to 12,13,14 who ranged from 1600 to 1800 chips. so they come in and there is 19 players total and 15 are getting paid. is something wrong with that picture lol?

maybe i need to be doing this next time. doesnt that give you an overall much better chance of placing than coming in at the start of the tourney? they were ranked ahead of 3 chips stacks and on a par with others that were ranked in the placings and there was zero chance to them of being eliminated before this point like what happened already to more than half the field. i don't know, some of you all out there, what are your thoughts on this?
