How successful is this play? I have been playing a lot more tournaments recently and I was wondering your thoughts on this play I have seen few times: This usually happens around 50/100 blind level. Usually 1 limper and at most 2 Small Blind calls Big blind raises like 3-4BB. I've seen this a few times and the BB takes the pot easy. So I'm thinking this move was based on the limper and not because the BB actually had a big hand. Thoughts? Thanks.

There are always stack considerations to be made, but yeah that's a decently profitable play. It's for that reason that I quite often make that same play, but instead of 3-4xbb raises I end up all in, forcing my opponents to give the pot up with their crummy hands and avoiding situations where I must play post flop out of position because some loose player couldn't let go of their hand.

Your are dead on. It all depend on the stakes. The 3bb raise is more successful the better the players. In micro's you have to shove becasue the 3bb isn't going to get the guy with 95 offsuit to fold because he put money in the pot. Switching from live to online i have found plays that have been successful just don't work in small stake games. |

re: How successful is this play? poker "60% of the time it works every time" J/K. But as Bwammo said, if I have a playable hand based on others' calling range, then I am shoving rather than just 3-4xing it. While it is certainly a profitable play to be picking up dead chips, unfortunately, if you are the BB and 3x it, you are going to get called a lot more often then you would like by one of the limpers. Now you are OOP with a pretty big pot, making it very difficult, and expensive, to play your hand when you you miss. I typically use a 20% rule: In general, if I am going to play a pot and the pot equals at least 20% of my stack, I will just shove it in. This rule often comes in handy when limpers or antes are involved.

Used this at the casino like 3 times the other night. It certainly helps is people are adverse to calling all-ins. I always use hands with some showdown value though as Bwam said, 89 suited is perfect, but small PP's SC's, suited one gappers etc. Your range can change depending on how short your stack is in relation to the pot and blinds.
