Is folding to min re-raises ever bad?

Even if we know the villain is only ever 3-betting monsters.. (or at least hands that crush my range here)

Earlier tonight I was playing 3 handed at my mates.. (sng) the two of them are total fish, well ones not so bad (tight-passive) but the other one is a horrific player (loose-passive) :/

Blinds: 200-400, effective stack (mine) at around 20k..

I min-opened the button with J9d, 1 call.. and villain 3-bet to 1600, 1 fold. I flatted and the flop came J93.. he over jammed for like 4x the pot and I called. He showed 10s and called me bad for calling his re-raise with J9, I replied telling him that his re-raise sizing was horrible and I was pretty much forced to call for the flop..

(I called the flop shove because he has a history of stacking off light, he loves to play pre-flop poker and get his 200bbs in with J10 and other nonsense..in the past he's stacked off 3 ways with 1 pair.. stuff like that, he classes Zynga Poker as a good game)

Results aside (he rivered a 10 for a set, and then proceeded to tell me how good a player he is..) is it ever right to fold to a min-reraise? I mean I am 50bbs deep but this one has been bothering me for the last few hours.

What do you lot think?

I have same question too. I tend to raise a lot in position to steal. If its a passive table I get away with it. But occasionally I get a aggro blind who 3bets me off my hand. I think the 3 bet should be 3x or more. 2x minraise just invites a call.

I ususally call min 3-bets for meta-game purposes.

Also a min re-reaise gives good immediate odds and if they only do it strong excellent implied odds.I don't think there are many times when I fold to a min re-raise pre.

What happens in a lot of tournaments is that there is a standard raise that will take down the blinds most of the time and when that amount works, everyone starts doing it. I.e. someone raises 2.2x and everyone starts doing it.

You are raising good hands in good position so you want calls from weak hands out of position, right?

There is a school of thought that you should raise larger in EP because A. you don't want a ton of callers behind you when you're OOP and B. it's harder to extract value OOP and C. you're presumably raising a stronger range than normal. There is an opposite school of thought that if you raise smaller in EP with a stronger range you will get more calls from wider ranges, whereas if you raise larger from late position you get more fold equity when your range is weaker.

I'm not sure which is correct, both have merit. I think it depends a lot on the table dynamics. But if someone is 3-betting you too often make your raises smaller to lose less when you fold and to make it cheaper when you call. Or just tighten up your range and/or 4-bet/shove a wider value range.

It's not so easy. If you were making a 3 bet minraising you will get callers very often. Afterwards (if no ace appears you make a big continuation bet). Then your opponent needs courage and a good hand to call. So this is pretty seldom and sucsessful to play this w/ strong or rubbish too. If you don't bluff you should play so only w/ aces.

at a full table I wouldnt of played J9 ever unless forced; its too easy to get A5s etc... But, knowing this crew, 3 handed, not a bad play. In the immortal words of the guy that supposedly killed Tommy Rocky Horror in Pulp Fiction (Ving Rhames)-"Thats just your pride f-ing with you"...You had a minny suck out on the flop and then he compounded his error by playing the turn but was rewarded with a major suck out.

10-10 aint all that with a J on the board. He overplayed it - like there were all under cards on the flop. Keep rockin and remember the good plays (non suckouts)as well - they teach you more.

i def would call his reraise pre: its 3 handed and you will be raising a lot from the button and therefore they will be reraising a lot from the blinds (unless ofcourse theyre the type of players who rarely 3-bet pre.

folding to 3bet min raise is not bad. But I never do it cause it makes others aware im willing to fold to a 3bet and i get 3betted lighter and more often..
I think the villian who is extremene tight (only 3bets AA KK) then i may fold if the 3bet is more than just min raise.......but if just mini raise I call see if i get lucky on the flop and generally check fold (if i dont hit my two pair or set)cause I know the allin shove is coming after the flop.
For the loose villian who like to 3 bet their 10,10 ....Ax.....78s etc I think you played how you should have flat call ......you might even try to 4bet if you notice them 3bet too often.
