Hey guys,
I've been playing 5NL for the last 2 months, And I've really enjoyed it thus far.
Anyway, the last couple of days I've been trying out some MTT's and I'm really enjoying them too, Now I'm kind of in doubt with which I should continue.
So what's the most profitable in the long run? And which is the best to learn poker?
I've been reading up about Cash game strategies for the last 2 months, So if I'd move to MTT's I'd start all over again right?
Also I'm still going to school and my time-schedule isn't always the same, MTT's take up a couple of hours if you get in deep, so I'm not always able to play them. Is it an idea to mix it up? Or would that affect my game in a bad way?
Thx !

profitable, cash always, if you will reach a very good level, eg NL200.
MTT has very large swing, up or down, so, depends on your bankroll, but if you are very good at play MTT, I think hours winning rate MTT looks a little better thank cash at the same buy in level!

I don't know star over from MTT if u play a lot of hands on cash table, at least at the first two level, it is the same for cash table and MTT

do not mix cash and MTT together if you are PHIL IVEY, apples and oranges, different style. Worst thing is that you may running bad on both MTTs and Cash tables

I've read up some more, and I think I'll just continue with cash games, because of the high variance in tourney's and the long grind it is.
Now to be honest, I like tournament poker more because it feels more like a competition to me, it's more about winning. where cash games feel more grindy.

But I'm looking at the long run, I wanna play poker more serious in the future, and I know it's way too early to think about it, But if I'd ever make it my 2nd job or so, I think it's a huge disadvantage to be committed to the tournament durations.

if you will go up in the stakes cash will be profitable playing up to 16-30 tables at one time, but if you becoming a very good player mtt will be even more profitable. But therefor you need to get into cash at leat in 10 % of the tourneys playing in tourneys with around 300-400 persons.

I will just try to get a solid bankroll playing cash to get up to tourneys, they make much more fun for me

I think cash games can also be very profitable playing 4/5 tables on 200 or 400 NL? or am I wrong?

And yea, I'd like to do that, but on pokerstars most fields contain 1000's of players. So when playing a big tournament and I get in deep, it'll take my whole day, Which leaves me no time to be with friends or my girlfriend.

That's the thing. Time constraints on the MTTs. They do take a while, but, I enjoy them sometimes to break the monotony of the single tables. They require more patience I think, too.

It doesn't matter really, just what you are more comfortable/enjoy more i guess.

The MTT's require more patience? I think you're wrong there..
Many microstakes Cash games are really nitty, and I always select my tables on a min avg VPIP of 25%, Still, I'm starting to get really annoyed of just 4-tabling 5NL cash games, and after an hour I have played just a few big hands.
(And I'm not a nit at all)

Your deepest run in a MTT is only a couple of hours???? Wow you must not have cashed well, unless your going into monster buy in small MTTs. I am used to 11 and a half hour grind 10k man tourneys. Final table one of those, that can be profitable, if you have the patience, and know when to make the moves late. I used to run two to three MTTs at the same time, as I bust I put my concentrations into the tourneys or tourney I have left. Usually just making the money doesnt mean crap, depending on the size of the tourney and the buy in. I remember my last real deep run was a 3.30 cent rebuy on stars with over 10k people in it. I ended up in 7th for 2750 off a 9.30 investment. They can pay off, if you dont mind the grind, and you have the time, start out with low buy in big field tourneys. That one tourney paid for my next 1000 attemps at the 12.5k garaunteed $2.75 tourney. I won 1400 my first attempt at that.
side note, shortly after I cashed some money off stars, this is back in 2010, I because unable to make a deep run. I wasnt playing arrogant, I was as tight as ever, watching every player intently, felt like a d00mswitch. Luckily for me I got all my cash off before april 15th. I do miss stars and tilt, maybe the switch wont be on me anymore when they come back on?

I have only played a few MTT's, and most are small fields, my best run was 1st in a field of only 200.
I know the larger ones can take awfully long, and that's exactly my point.
Let's say you have a date with your gf at 7pm, Than you can't start a tournament that day.
When you play cash games you can play and quit whenever you want.
