Can SNG play be worked in to MTT games?

I am asking this since i suck at MTT play and play real great in SNG games.
I find i can make a good run in SNG's and start building a stack quick.
In MTT's i am finding it harder to build a stack, and always find myself short stacked, and to the point i am shoving all-in.

How do you have 6.5k posts?

At the final table, SNG's will help you tremendously. The experience of playing from one table to the winner. But most importantly, the money is tied up in the top spots, When you play SNG's you king of have to go for the win to be profitable, which in MTTs is not the case. At the final table, (since the money is generally more) people get scared and try to prolong time in an MTT and hope some other guy does the heavy lifting, the more experienced you are at SNG's, where you should be playing for the win, the better off you will be at final tables.

That being said, the steps to get to the final table. Very different, especially online. Tables are constantly breaking, you will find yourself against new players so that your image is not as important as it would be in a SNG, still important though. You will find yourself with a short stack and really have to learn the concept of (M, Abb, BB).

Also, MTTs are hell mentally, you just have to accept losing, over, and over and over and over again. All for that euphoric feeling of winning. I believe it to be the biggest roller coaster of emotions in poker.

As for building a stack, this won't be the best advice but it can help you in the short term. Observe your table carefully, pick the tight guy and just bully him to no end. Then try to bust him when you get a hand. At least your playing the player and not the cards. It's not the smartest, or most efficient, but it can work. The other way is just to steal the blinds/pots. But even with that, you are still going to need luck to go far.

This just mainly being my very very limited experience. Read some articles, maybe even a book. Ask some of the MTT player on this site, I don't want to name names, but I will anyways, JohnnyWatford and Dakota. Don't take my advice as final, just more guideliney.

Um i don't play alot of MTTs, i do play SNGs and ring tables. The only MTTs i play are CC games, and not every week. Also, as it is in my sig i only have one 1st place win in a CC MTT game.

I do have alot of success in them, but i do want get better at MTT play.
If i had to say my placing rate, i think it would be 7 to 8 out of 10 sng's.

Steal, raise, and flip. And often.

Learn how to play varying stack sizes & vs. varying stack sizes. Alot of players make mistakes in this aspect of MTT play.

Watching a handful of MTT training vids. would also prove to be helpful. (I think there's links to some freebies here on CC... might not be real applicable mind you.. cuz I believe it was a higher buyin & player was 'ChipSteeler' (aka 'Jeremy').

This is actually the nut opposite of what you should do.

In SNGs, you should play to finish third. The No. 1 thing you need to do to grind SNGs profitably is to navigate the bubble. Making marginal calls on the bubble is an absolute ICM disaster. Of course, if you have the bigstack on the bubble, you abuse the hell out of it and try to steal every hand, but if you're 2nd/3rd stacks, you should avoid confrontations with the big stack as much as possible.

In MTTs, making the money is not your goal. You should be trying to win the whole thing from the moment you start till...the final table, ironically. Bubbling is no big deal and people play far too tight on the bubble when they should be mixing it up. You need to constantly steal from medium stacks and try to play huge pots with big stacks because, well, you need all the chips and they have more of them.

At the final table, the dynamics are totally different. The shortstacks will often just be happy to be there. You can avoid marginal spots if there are many shorties because moving up one more spot makes a huge difference in winning, if you can move up from 9th to 6th it's usually pretty big.

a mtt is really just a big sng, but the hardest part is opening up your early game
i think sngs will help your mtts(pushfold), and mtts should help your sngs(xploiting smaller edges and post flop play)

i feel like in an MTT, i'm always looking to make it to the next break with an average chip stack ... if i have more, awesome ... if im short, well i can double up ... as long as i have chips, i can survive ... you almost always have a full table, so you are in your full table mode


while in SnG, as players get felted and stacks change ... new dynamics come into play ... you might observe an overly patient big stack just wanting to cash before messing around that you can steal from or a small stack with a big range


and that's why i like tourneys ... yes, the cards always matter, but the structure & strategy and opportunistic play has always been interesting to me ... now single hands in cash can be great, since the hand is so much more likely to play out and the sparring back and forth is a fun battle


while in the tourney you are always both playing the hand while keeping the big picture in focus
