AK in a three-way pot. This is a one dollar 50/50 tournament, and there are 6 players left. MP goes all in w/1430 I call w/AKo, and I have about 3k in chips everybody folds BB insta-shoves w/3989. It probably would have been better for the both of us if BB had just called. But I have to decide whether to call or fold. So what should I have done?

LOL BB had KK MP had AQ I had AK I would have had the final two aces covered if I had called. In the end it didn't matter though. The kings held up, and I still won. good read, bad fold. I get to keep some of my chips as a bonus though. Last edited by pcgnome : 15th January 2012 at 3:36 AM.

I've been cruising along lately playing those DoNs w/o any strategy. I have an article from the archives saved up on my desktop. I should read it again. http://www.onlinefreeplaypoker.com/d...oker-strategy/ Last edited by pcgnome : 15th January 2012 at 1:20 PM.

re: AK in a three-way pot. poker Don't know about 50/50's do they have escalating payout or is it a flat payout structure like a true DoN format. If its a true DoN, calling is terrible IMO. Either overshove or fold. Calling just sets you up for exactly what happened. You get squeezed and are put to a decision. You didn't mention what the rest of the stacks at the table were, but with 6 left/ 5 paid are there any short-stacks who will be forced into multi-way showdown for their tournament life soon? If yes, and assuming initial shover isn't the short stack, just fold. Sounds weird, but DoN's are a nits game and I'm uniquely qualified for that . If the initial shover was the short-stack, then your play was correct and everyone else should have just called along and checked it down to likely eliminate the shorty. Standard DoN move. So cliffs notes: Shover is short stack- just call and entice rest of table to just call as they should. Shover is NOT the short stack, but there are one or two shortys at the table - just fold. Shover is NOT the short stack and there are no clear shortys at the table - shove. All standard IMO.

Agreed with Rudy, generally, if short stack has shoved then just call it to encourage the rest of the table to do the same and maximise the chances of him being eliminated. The only problem is that sometimes donks will be sitting at the table and will do stupid, unpredictable things - like shoving and threatening to make you the short stack or folding and making you go heads up against the short stack. The best way to avoid this is to take notes on the other players so by lategame you know what to expect.

Not sure exactly how this would change strategy in total, but I can think of several things. As big stack work to actually protect short-stack and continue to bleed chips from mid-stacks who are afraid of bubbling, stuff like that. This all assumes that I'm correct about some (all?) 50/50s having an escalating payout structure. If anyone has a definitive answer, I'd like to hear it. |
