Where Can a New Player Practice PLO?

The FT freerolls are crazy, ppl opening and bumping with ridiculous hands. The micro (cash) ring games don't seem much better, and have the added distraction of players swooping in, jamming a pot and disappearing. Aside from watching how to go broke playing disconnected hands, there doesn't seem much to be learned there.

The sanest games actually seem to be the larger buy-in Play Chip tourneys. The level of play at the PLO round of the nightly .10 7-game Forum tourney seems pretty high. Any other ideas about where a beginner can wet his beak in this game?

I practice alot in the freerolls on Pokerstars...they seem to be the best way to do it. Also occasionally a few of us will go into a special game with just a few extra on PS...doesn't cost too much, but it's both fun & great practice! GL!

The freerolls and low limits are full of bad players making bad plays, but you can still learn some thigns about the game from them. The tough part for me has been trying not to develop too many bad habits from playing adainst that type of competition. There are good players and donks at every level. Play consistant and try to improve. So what if people keep pushing all in in a free roll. Play your solid game, go as far as you can and get the practice.

Any high stakes obviously will mostly have better players, but not even high stake with real cash, try play money too. They play real good at high stakes. Playing freerolls and penny tournaments will honestly probably make you a worse poker player. You are right that forum tourney has decent omaha. Try any private game, most of the people who join private games are good poker players. Stick with those maybe, that would probably be the best way to learn. Wish you luck

Broad question as you mention MTT's and cash tables. If it's cash, start as the micro's and build a solid foundation to play. You CAN"T be results oriented becuase you'll develope bad habits that way.

For the tourny route. Have you thought of playing low BI sng's? You are risking much, and you aren't saddled with a huge time commitment.

If you are going to play in the FR games and even the micro stakes ring tables you have to be prepared for some really bad beats and most of the time be prepared to fold even what you perceive to be the nuts. I just made it to 7th place in a 240 game (10 cents) on Pokerstars. My best ever was 2nd. These 240 tourneys are a good way to get your feet wet. Play tight (only premium hands) for at least the first hour and then see where you stand after that.

I would say just keep on grinding those free rolls available to you. The more hands you play, the better your game will be. The micro game are brutal from time to time, but you just have to pick the right tables and make your move with strong hands.

I also learned PLO from playing with play chips on FTP.

It is possible to play with play chips and learn a lot. As long as you are playing with two things in mind 1) Play as if it were for real mioney 2) understand that most people don't 3) don't get into bad habbits. make calls you would make in real money situations. 4) Play in CC variety games when they include PLO.

re: Where Can a New Player Practice PLO? poker

The state of your bankroll can easily be a consideration in deciding where to practice. If you can afford to budget some amount per week or per month, then do that, and play at a level where this amount will let you play enough to constitute practicing. For instance, if I budget $11 a week, I'd play $1.10 tournaments so that I'd get to play at least 10.

One thing to remember is that this is a version of taking a shot, which means it's separate from your regular bankroll. As a result, if you lose half, you don't need to drop down to a lower level, although you can if you want.
