The Umbrella Effect?

I am reading Harrington On Hold'em, and he has used this term. I don't quite understand what it is and was wondering if someone could explain it. This is in "Harrington on Hold'em, Volume 1"

He is discussing how to play certain cards, in certain situations. The situation is that you have a caller in third position (before the flop), and you are in fifth position. You are holding a pocket pair, 8's or lower.

"In this situation, the small pairs benefit from what's called the umbrella effect. With one extra caller in the pot, calling with the small pairs gets you slightly better pot odds. As a result, you can call with eights, sevens, and sixes. On the button instead of fifth position, I would call with all these pairs. With the lower pairs, you're hoping to flop trips or catch an otherwise exceptionally favorable flop."

Haven't read the book but I'm going to guess its about the increased odds of one of them hitting top pair or just catching a piece of the flop so you get action more often if your set hits?

...then again could be about getting more publicity for your dollar. Either way, this guy probably knows better than me, Zach "Umbrella Man" Hall in the LAPT

he just means by calling evryone one behind you get better pots odds to call. so if someone behind you calls the person behind them get even better odds to call. so by calling as opposed to raising you may get more people in the pot not less.

Makes sense, although I don't know why he would be mentioning it for these particular hands in this section. Will have to read through the whole section again and see if I get something else out of it keeping that in mind.

What I think he is trying to say is that the extra caller is giving you some protection from someone else 3betting and because you're getting better pot odds (and probably better implied odds) in a multiway pot.

Is this in HoC or HoH? If it is HoH, why are you reading it, aren't you a cash game player?

It's HoH, I bought it when I wasn't sure what I was going to be playing. As I have a small bankroll and still just learning the game, I am currently concentrating on cash games as it seems to be a better way to get your skills up. Had already bought the book, so am still working through it.

I guess I would call myself a "new to poker, playing anything I can and trying to find my Niche" player.

Biggest problem I am finding right now is getting time to play, so cash games work when I have only 15 - 20 minutes or when the kids leave me alone for a while. If I get into a tournament, something else always seems to come up and I have to quite before I get anywhere decent.

its been years since i've read the book. if i recall he's referring to drawing hands(or implied odds hands) eg middle pairs and SC's these hands do better with lots of players in the pot. as said about the umbrella effect. say the your getting 3 to 1 to call the next guy get 4 to 1, 5 to 1 etc. now there's lots of players in the pot and its more likely to have hit someone. or even if it didnt someone is more likely to bluff. in other words theres more implied odds with more players in the pot. and sets will still likely be the best hand. this however(the umbrella effect) does make it more likely someone will try a squeeze play as there is more money in the pot.

I thought the same thing as cardplayer52.
Hands like 7/7 are drawing hands, with a lot of small losses and hopefully some big wins when you hit a set. However, when you hit a set you aren't guaranteed to make the pot big enough to pay for all those times that you played 7/7 and had to fold on the flop. But the more people in a pot, the more likely they are to hit something like top pair/top kicker or two pair so your chances of getting paid off when you hit is increased.

+1

I read this a few months ago and what VW has said is my interpretation. You get the pot odds to call with these low pairs in those positions while having some protection against raises. This circumstance allows you to see a cheap flop hoping to make a set and getting optimal ev.
